HP ENVY 4520 All-in-One Printer
Other

I received a message that an extension from my HP Printer Series 4520 will not work with my Mac now or in the near future. I will need an updated version of the HP software if it is available or planned because Mac IOS doesn't work with it anymore. Is there a way I can remove or disable the extension, and the consequences of doing so?

It sounds like macOS has flagged an HP printer extension as outdated or incompatible with future updates. Here’s what you can do:

Check for HP Software Updates

  • Go to HP’s official support website
  • Enter "HP ENVY 4520" and select your macOS version.
  • Download and install any available updates.

Remove or Disable the Extension

If HP hasn't released an updated version, you can disable or remove the outdated extension:

Disable the Extension Temporarily

  1. Click the Apple MenuSystem SettingsPrivacy & Security
  2. Select ExtensionsPrinter Extensions
  3. Locate the HP extension and disable it.

Remove the Extension Permanently

  1. Open Finder → Click GoGo to Folder
  2. Enter: /Library/Extensions/ or /System/Library/Extensions/
  3. Look for an HP-related extension (e.g., hp_io_enabler.kext)
  4. Move it to Trash (You may need to enter your Mac password).

Consequences of Removing the Extension

  • If the extension is required for full printer functionality, removing it may cause printing/scanning issues.
  • However, basic printing may still work using Apple’s built-in AirPrint.
  • If scanning stops working, try using Apple’s Image Capture app instead of HP’s software.

Use AirPrint as an Alternative

Instead of using HP’s software, macOS supports AirPrint, which allows you to print without additional drivers:

  1. Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners
  2. Remove the existing HP printer
  3. Click Add Printer, select your HP ENVY 4520
  4. Under "Use," select AirPrint and click Add

Let me know if you need further clarification! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
