The setup of my new OfficeJet Pro 8135e is stuck on the Firmware Updates screen. it gives me the option to selet "Auto" or "Notify," and it goes to the next screen where it says I can change it in the settings. But the "Continue" button on that last screen doesn't go anywhere. If I back up, it just last on the Firmware Updates screen again. A hard reboot has done nothing.
Note that the printer prints fine. I just can't get it through the set-up prompts on the screen.
Kind of regretting this purchase already...

Hi @kdurfey,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I hear your frustration getting stuck on a setup screen on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e, when everything else works fine, can feel like being locked out of a room you’ve already furnished. The good news is your printer is functional, so this is a setup UI glitch, not a hardware failure.
Steps to Fix Setup Freeze on Firmware Update Screen
- Restart the Printer
- Unplug the power cord while the printer is ON.
- Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power on.
- Skip Setup via HP App
- Download HP App on your phone or PC: HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site.
- Add your printer in the app → Complete setup from there.
- This often bypasses stuck-on-screen prompts.
- Update Firmware Manually
- Go to HP App → Printer Settings → Advanced Settings (EWS).
- Navigate to Tools → Printer Updates → Firmware Update.
- Or download firmware directly:
👉 HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e All-in-One Printer | HP® Support
- Factory Reset (if issue persists)
- On the printer: Setup → Printer Maintenance → Restore Factory Defaults.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi and retry setup.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
