Just bought this printer from Curry's UK, asked if it is compatible with Apple MacBook Pro, salesperson said yes, but there is no HP Software Driver for the HP ENVY INSPRE 7224e Printer on the MacBook Pro. Tried using the HP.App just wants me to buy ink, tried the HP Easy Start, which said, we were not able to automatically locate any software options for this product. Please go to the HP website and search for product solutions. Tried that, the message after selecting the HP ENVY INSPRE 7224e device is "Two simple steps to show what drivers are available for your product", Step 1.  "Identify and select OS", the drop down only offers Linux and Windows,, Step 2 would have been, "Select the version", underneath the two options is the doomsday message, "If your operating system is not listed then HP may not provide driver support for your product with that operating system. I don't see my operating system  Read more so I click, and the message is "Alternative solutions might be available for your HP printer or compute", and lists 1. use the HP. app (lol / full loop) , 2. AirPrint is a built-in printing solution for Mac, iPhone, and iPad. You can print from most apps that have a print feature. / ARRGGGGHHH!. This driver only enables you to use black and white, there is no option to print in color to the HP ENVY INSPRE 7224e Printer from an Apple MacBook Pro running Tahoe 26.  Nightmare. Anyone wants to print to this printer in color from a MacBook Pro, needs to go via a Windows or Linux computer.

Hi @JBWalesUK,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP ENVY Inspire 7224e is not offering HP software drivers on your MacBook Pro, and you’re only able to print in black and white. Let’s go through a few steps to clarify what’s happening and how to enable full color printing.

Understand how this printer works on macOS

The HP ENVY Inspire 7224e does not use traditional HP macOS drivers.

On macOS (including Sonoma / Tahoe), HP supports this model using Apple AirPrint, not downloadable HP drivers.

Confirm the printer is added as an AirPrint device

Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

Remove the printer if it’s already listed.

Click Add Printer, select the printer from the list.

Make sure “Use: AirPrint” is selected before adding it.

Enable color printing (this is the key step)

Open any app and press Print.

Click Show Details in the print dialog.

Open the Media & Quality or Color Options section.

Set Color Mode to Color (not Grayscale).

Make sure Black & White / Grayscale is unchecked.

Check printer presets

In the print dialog, look at the Preset dropdown.

If it says Black & White or a custom preset, change it to Default Settings.

Save a new preset with Color enabled if needed.

Check printer settings in HP Smart (not for drivers)

HP Smart on macOS is mainly for setup, ink status, and maintenance, not drivers.

Open HP Smart and confirm:

Color cartridges are detected

No “Ink subscription only” or setup warnings are active

Verify printer firmware

From HP Smart, check Printer Settings > Advanced Settings.

Ensure firmware is up to date, as early firmware versions sometimes default to grayscale on AirPrint.

Test with another macOS app

Try printing a color image from Preview or Photos.

Some browsers and apps remember grayscale settings independently.

I hope this helps.

Hi Kuroi_Kenshi,

Your reply was helpful, thank you but I needed to do one other thing, and maybe this is useful info, and context and the order of things is important. My situation

Before adding the new printer, the HP Envy Inspire 7200 series printer,

I already had a HP OfficeJet 4650 printer + Apple AirPrint installed and was using the HP 4650 without any issues,

Was able to print via Apple AirPrint, options were Black and White, Black and White - Draft, Black and White - Fine, Color, Color - Fine.

Then I bought the HP Envy Inspire 7200 printer.

Installed HP.app and HP Easy Start.app,

Added HP Envy Inspire 7200 printer.

When I checked tried to print using new HP Envy Inspire 7200 printer, in Apple AirPrint dialogue, only options were Black and White, Black and White - Draft, Black and White - Fine,

Color options were not available for the HP Envy Inspire 7200,

But color options were still available when printing via HP OfficeJet 4650 printer.

So I removed both printers from my printers list, added the HP Envy Inspire 7200 first,

When I checked tried to print using new HP Envy Inspire 7200 printer, in Apple AirPrint dialogue, now the options were Black and White, Black and White - Draft, Black and White - Fine, and Color, Color - Fine.  So Fixed. 🙂

Then I added the HP OfficeJet 4650 printer back, and it was also ok, so maybe in my situation, by removing both printers then adding the  HP Envy Inspire 7200 printer first, it has fixed the issue.

Thanks for your help, it made me think of trying the above,

Have a great day Kuroi_Kenshi.
