@Rupert1980, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer supports color printing on A3 paper, but Tray 2 has some limitations that could be causing your issue.

You mentioned:

“No color printing tray 2 / Cannot print color on A3 in tray 2”
This likely means:

  • Tray 2 is loaded with A3 paper.
  • When printing from Tray 2, only black & white prints are coming out, or color is disabled.

Key things to check:

Tray 2 Settings in Printer Driver

  • Open Devices and Printers > Right-click your printer > Printing Preferences
  • Go to the Paper/Quality or Advanced tab
  • Make sure Tray 2 is set as the source
  • Under Color, ensure “Print in Grayscale” is not checked
  • Ensure paper type is set to Plain Paper or compatible with color printing

Application-Level Settings

If you’re printing from Word, Excel, etc.:

  • Go to Print > Printer Properties
  • Check if “Black & White” or “Grayscale” is selected – switch to Color

Firmware/Driver Issues

Sometimes Tray 2 + A3 + color printing issues can be a bug:

  • Go to HP Software & Drivers – OfficeJet Pro 7740
  • Update to the latest firmware and Full Feature Software

Printer Front Panel Settings

  • Go to Settings > Paper Tray Settings > Tray 2
  • Confirm paper size = A3 and type = Plain Paper or HP Brochure/Presentation Paper
  • If set to “Other” or photo paper, the printer may restrict color output

Tray 2 Media Type

  • Only certain paper types support color printing on Tray 2
  • If you’re using thick, glossy, or unsupported media, the printer may default to monochrome

Try printing an A3 color page (like a color PDF) from Tray 2 using:

  1. HP Smart App or Adobe Acrobat
  2. Ensure Color is enabled in printer settings

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
