Operating System: macOS 10.14 Mojave

Whenever I try to fax directly from the Mac (i. e. without printing and scanning) the function does not work. Otherwise the printer works and scans as it should, and I can send faxes from the printer itself. So the fax problem has to be elsewhere. The fax job is always stuck within the queue. The window – "HP Color LaserJet CM2320nf MFP [Personal Information Removed] (Fax)" – says "Modem disconnected or offline". Of course there is no modem. But the printer should substitute it. The hp firmware is the latest available, and I have reinstalled it anyway.
