Welcome to the HP Community --

It's true that not every application provides the level of control needed to select the Source (Tray) during the job setup.

That said -- and without regard to the sort of exception you might be using that lacks these controls -- the Embedded Web Server (EWS) can be used to adjust the Tray and Paper settings and the Default Print settings.

After that, yes - During job configuration, you must be able to mark exceptions to the standard / preferred Source / Tray.  Should the method you are using now lack any controls to select Source / Tray, perhaps consider an alternative app or software to configure the job and print the labels.

============================

EWS – Tray and Paper Management

Classic EWS - InkJet Printers

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper (Management)

Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type

Model and EWS version Dependent:  Advanced section

Click Apply to save changes

EWS_Tray_and_Paper_DeskJet_4

OR

Alternate EWS format - Select new InkJet printers and select LaserJet printers

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Paper > Trays > click on Tray to configure

Next (as available)

Section Print > Default Print Options > Select default options / tray

EWS_9135_Tray_and_Paper_9

EWS_9135_Print_Default_Print_Options_9

Tray and Paper – Paper Size / Paper Type / Paper Weight

Paper Size, Type, and Weight loaded in the printer tray must be supported for use in that tray.

EWS (Embedded Web Server) provides access and control for Settings, including Tray and Paper.

Reminder

HP Smart / HP App Mobile might require that paper size / type is rechecked / adjusted before the content is opened for print.

Notes

Depending on the printer model, the Printer Control Panel touchscreen might provide access to Paper Size / Type settings immediately after the paper is (re)loaded into the appropriate printer intake tray.

Newer printer?  Touchscreen Printer Control Panel locked against making changes?  Try username "admin" and the PIN located on the sticker on the inside of the front door of the printer.

Trays

  • If the printer lacks a second tray, all paper / types are supported in the single available tray.
  • Printers that include a Photo Tray generally restrict the paper sizes and paper type supported in that tray.

Custom size?

If your paper is a custom size, look for "Custom" in the full list of paper sizes.

Remember >> Printers with more than one tray might only support custom paper sizes and types in one tray.

If EWS does not allow setting the paper size or size “Custom”,

If the printer includes a touchscreen display printer control panel,

Look for the setting for “Custom” in the Printer Control Panel after (re)loading the paper to be used

NOTE:  Size Custom is not available for all printers

I've tried this and there is no option for the multi purpose tray.  I tried power cycling and restoring to factory defaults.  No where does the Multi purpose tray every show up.

Does this printer even have a multi-purpose tray?!? Starting to think it doesn't.

I will need to print labels and everything from tray 1 or tray 2?!?!

Another try...

Update / Edit - Add Printer Media Specifications

EWS displays the available tray and paper details.

Open EWS -

Open Section Paper > Trays

Check the available settings for each tray to see which paper sizes and paper types that tray supports.

Use the trays as defined in EWS and / or the printer applications and software.

Reminder

For those printers that support more than one tray, it is common that one of those trays will support a more limited range of paper sizes and types.

As noted in the printer's own specifications, Tray 1 might be defined as the "multipurpose tray" just because it supports more paper sizes and paper types.

Use Tray 1 for custom paper sizes and paper types other than "plain" office paper.

Standard Label sheets can likely be loaded and printed from either tray.
