Hi @Bob3610,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I can imagine how frustrating it must be to have the poster option grayed out when you’re trying to print something important. Let's go through some steps to figure out what's causing this and hopefully get it working.
To help narrow down the issue:
- Are you printing from a specific application (e.g., Word, Photoshop), or is this happening with multiple programs?
- Have you checked the print settings or paper size to make sure they’re configured correctly for a poster-sized print?
- Is the printer showing as connected and fully functional in the print queue?
Let's try these steps.
Check Paper Size and Layout Settings:
- The poster option may be grayed out if the paper size selected isn't compatible with the poster format. In the print dialog, double-check that the paper size is set to a larger format (e.g., A3 or custom size) that would allow poster printing.
Ensure Poster Option is Enabled in Printer Settings:
- In some cases, the "Poster" option might not be visible unless certain features are enabled in the printer properties. Go to your printer's properties from the print dialog box, and ensure that the "Poster" feature is available or enabled in the "Page Layout" or similar section.
Check for Application-Specific Restrictions:
- Some applications may have limitations that prevent certain print options from appearing. Try using a different application to see if the poster option becomes available. For example, try printing from Microsoft Word, Paint, or another image editor.
Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers:
- Although you've already downloaded the latest driver, there may have been a hiccup with the installation. Try uninstalling the printer and reinstalling the drivers completely, then reboot your computer and try printing again.
Print as PDF First:
- If the poster option is still unavailable, try printing your file as a PDF first with the correct poster settings. Once it's saved as a PDF, you can print it from the PDF viewer (like Adobe Acrobat), which may offer more flexible print options.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Unfortunately these are generic solutions that I have already tried and don't address my printer, the Envy 4500. Whatever program I use I usually create a PDF because printing direct can be problematic. Sadly Acrobat Reader doesn't give any additional print options - poster is still grayed out.
