HP Officejet Pro 8630 e-All-in-One Printer

Not able to update printer firmware because device is in error state and cannot be reflashed.

I have downloaded Easy App and installed successfully but Print Test Page will not print.   Not able to run firmware updater because of device error state. I have checked cables, cycled power, using only HP Ink Cartridges.  Installed/Uninstalled drivers.

Stuck in some "error state."

How do we get this device out of error state so that we can make sure firmware is up to date?   Then, reinstall driver and hopefully printer will be able to print.

did not resolve the issue.  I am being prevented from uploading the firmware updater BECAUSE of the device being in "error state."HP_Printer_8630_DeviceIsInErrorState.png

UPDATE: Update - I was able to move beyond error state by removing all HP toner (yes using all HP toner) and upload latest firmware and driver into this HP 8630. But Even after power cycle the printer is still not working. Still return to this (attached screen) with no ability to go into Menu/Tools etc.

Given we were having issues with our other HP 8630 and we had spent a LOT of money on HP toner my wife purchased this one a refurbished 8630 which was still amazingly expensive.  Is it possible that even using all HP toner that there is some security hitch between moving toner between same HP product.  Is there something we identify if this is a toner security chip issue and reset it.  Again, we are STILL using HP toner so not sure why this would cause a problem with HP printer.
Regardles, we are several thousand dollars into HP products and ink at this point -- we would appreciate if the HP Printers and HP Toners could be made to work without this level headache.  If you are volunteering to help -- this frustration is clearly not directed at you.  Oy.  THX! - B

Hi @Brett50,

Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Toner Chip Compatibility

While HP toner cartridges generally have chips that communicate with the printer to verify they are authentic and full, there is always a chance that the toner cartridge or the chips might have become misaligned or malfunctioned. Even though you're using all HP toner, sometimes the cartridges from a refurbished printer or a new one may have slight variances in chip calibration or registration.

  • You can try reseating the toner cartridges to ensure they are properly connected. If they’re not properly installed or the contacts aren’t aligned, the printer might fail to recognize them. If you can, inspect the chip on the toner cartridge to make sure it’s clean and free from dust or debris.

Firmware/Driver Issues

Sometimes, even after updating to the latest firmware and drivers, issues might persist if there is an incomplete installation or a bug with the firmware version itself.

  • It may be worth rolling back to an earlier version of the firmware if the latest update is causing issues. Try uninstalling the printer driver and reinstalling the printer drivers from the HP support site, ensuring you get the correct version for your specific model.

Printer Reset

In cases like this, a full reset of the printer can help clear out any lingering software or configuration issues that might be causing it to lock up and prevent access to the menu or tools.

  • To reset the HP 8630, you can perform a "factory reset." Depending on the model, you can do this by either using the printer's control panel or via the printer's web interface. If the screen is frozen and not responding, this might be tricky, but you could also try unplugging the printer for a few minutes to reset it entirely.

Check for Hardware Failures

If the above steps don’t help, there could be a hardware issue causing the printer to malfunction. Issues with the printer's mainboard or the toner sensing mechanism could cause the screen to remain locked.

  • Given that your printer is refurbished, I would also suggest contacting HP support to confirm whether the printer itself might have a warranty or if they can assist you in troubleshooting deeper hardware problems. Sometimes refurbished printers might have lingering defects or issues that weren’t fully addressed in the refurbishment process.

You can also consult this guide to troubleshoot the 'Printer Failure' error.

I hope these steps help resolve the issue

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks Garp.  We may be on two separate threads (a DM and this public thread).  To the extent that this public thread may help others I will respond (also respond here).  Thanks for the list of To-Dos; unfortunately, they did not resolve.   Right, given that my understanding is that we are legally supposed to be able to use non HP inkjet cartridges esp on this older HPs ... I am doing same test but with non HP OEM toner.   As we have spent tens of thousands of dollars on HP products overs of the years hopefully this is not an issue particularly on this older HP printers.  I would like to be able to eventually give some of these older HP printers to schools and they should be able to use the less expensive toner.   Etc.
Alright ... so presently using older HP printer with non HP inkjet toner for the latest -- problem solving tests, but getting same issue -- printer LCD just keeps claiming that  newly installed inkjet cartridges are damaged even though brand new ones installed.
Other HP support threads take us to this HP Support thread:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05308850

Which states "HP has a firmware update that removes the dynamic security feature."   When I go to my HP printer downloads: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-officejet-pro-8630-e-all-in-one-printer-series/model/5367619...

I first install the latest driver =>

  • HP Easy Install Driver (dated Nov 12, 2024)

And then when I attempt to install the latest firmware=>

  • Dec 7, 2020 firmware -- I get to a page in the install that reads "The firmware updater does not contain upgrades for your device.
Is that because the the Dec 7, 2020 firmware is already installed when a HP customer installs drivers in the order presented on that page; ie. has already used HP Easy Install Driver (dated Nov 12, 2024) .

Bottomline -- does the HP Easy Install Driver (dated Nov 12, 2024) -- disable this Dynamic Security Feature? or do people need to first uninstall
    • HP Easy Install Driver (dated Nov 12, 2024)  so as to attempt to so at to be able to install Dec 7, 2020 firmware ? independent of the HP Easy Install Driver (dated Nov 12, 2024) ... or?

LSS, presently, it appears to the "dynamic security feature" is still preventing me from using my HP Printer with non HP toner.  I am still locked in a printer LCD screen that incorrectly claims  that newly installed inkjet cartridges are damaged even though brand new ones (Non HP OEM) installed.

@Brett50, Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support Community! 🎉

I’m here to help you troubleshoot your issue and get things back on track. Just follow these steps below, and we’ll have you running smoothly in no time:

It looks like you're dealing with the "Dynamic Security" feature on your HP Officejet Pro 8630 printer, which can prevent the use of non-HP ink cartridges. Here’s what you need to do to disable Dynamic Security on your HP Officejet Pro 8630:

Step 1: Remove Non-HP Cartridges

  • Turn off the printer, remove the non-HP cartridges, insert a working HP cartridge, then turn the printer back on and check if the error message disappears.

Proceed with Firmware Update and Disabling Dynamic Security

From the details you’ve provided, it seems you’re concerned that the firmware you are attempting to install may not be the correct one or might already be up to date.

  • Turn on the Printer and connect it to the network.
  • Go to this link on your computer:
HP Officejet Pro 8630 Firmware Download
  • Find the firmware section and click Download for the latest firmware.
  • Run the downloaded file and follow the on-screen steps to install the update.
  • Restart the printer after the update finishes.

Or, you can check for updates directly on the printer:

  • On the printer’s screen, go to Settings.
  • Look for Printer Maintenance or Tools.
  • Select Check for Updates and follow the steps.

If you’ve already installed the latest driver, try the following steps:

By HP Smart App

  • Open HP Smart App (If not installed, download it from HP’s website or get the HP Smart App from the Microsoft Store.)
  • Go to Settings or Tools in the software.
  • Find HP Cartridge Protection or Enable Cartridge Protection.
  • Uncheck or turn off Cartridge Protection.
  • Save the changes and close the software.

Disable Dynamic Security Through the Printer Settings:

If updating firmware does not automatically disable the dynamic security feature, try adjusting it directly through the printer settings. Here’s how:

  • Turn on your printer and ensure it’s connected to the network.
  • On the printer control panel, tap the Settings icon (gear icon).
  • Go to Printer Maintenance or Setup.
  • Select Preferences or Printer Settings.
  • Look for an option that says Dynamic Security or Cartridge Protection.
  • If the option is available, disable it. Confirm the change and restart your printer.

Once the dynamic security feature is disabled, install your non-HP ink cartridges again. The printer should now allow them to function correctly without showing errors about damaged cartridges.

I’m pretty confident this will do the trick! But hey, if you run into any bumps along the way or need a little extra help, just give me a shout! I’ve got your back. 💪

Hi Garp -- After extensive, careful and methodical testing (installing all the latest drivers, power cycles -- nada; then, carefully cleaned the printhead do full reinstalls over again ... still nada (ie. still BLOCKED).

We keep getting the same blocker we have always been getting => "Cartridge Problem: "One or more cartridges appear to be damaged.  Remove them and replace with new cartridges."   (Magenta and Yellow keep getting indicated.)

... when this is NOT the problem... in other words => yes, we have removed and replaced with Orig HP toner and HP printer still does not work.  We keep getting the same incorrect error message and it blocks further action; for example, we cannot print out (basic Print Report or Toner Report) using colors that supposedly that do work. Agh!

We continue to have have big dead "brick" and a LOT of lost time and money.

Please tell me that HP will come and recycle these?   THX - B
