Perhaps start with AirPrint -- the underlying protocols are similar and AirPrint is already built into your iOS device.
As is true for HP Smart - Mobile -
Airprint requires a supported printer model -
and
- Both printer and device (iPhone) should be on the same (Wireless) network
- On the Phone, Switch ON both Location Services and Bluetooth

setting up new printer on my iPhone but it keeps searching and not finding it
Setting Up Your HP Printer on an iPhone
Steps to Set Up Your HP Printer Using HP Smart App
Ensure Your iPhone Is Connected to Wi-Fi:
- Make sure your iPhone is connected to the wireless network that you want to connect your printer to.
- Know the Wi-Fi password of your network.
Download HP Smart App:
- If you haven't already, download the HP Smart app from the App Store. You can visit 123.hp.com to access the App Store and download the app.
Turn on Bluetooth:
- Ensure that Bluetooth is turned on for your iPhone. HP Smart uses Bluetooth to make the setup process faster and easier on iOS devices. Note that this is required only for setup and printing using Bluetooth is not supported.
Ensure Printer is in Auto Wireless Connect (AWC) Setup Mode:
- For the first-time setup, the printer is ready for setup after it is powered on and keeps searching for the HP Smart app to connect within two hours.
- If your printer stops searching, press and hold the Wi-Fi button on the back of the printer for at least three seconds to put it back into AWC setup mode. You should see the edge lighting (two small light bars glowing blue and the lower large light bar pulsing blue from the middle outward).
Open HP Smart App:
- Open the HP Smart app on your iPhone.
- Tap the Plus icon on the home screen. Select your printer from the list. If your printer is not visible, tap "Add a new printer" and follow the onscreen instructions to add the printer to your network.
Follow Onscreen Instructions:
- The HP Smart app will guide you through the setup process to connect your printer to your Wi-Fi network.
Troubleshooting Tips:
- Check Wireless Reception: Ensure the printer is within good wireless reception range. Move closer to the router if necessary.
- Cycle Power: Turn off and then turn back on your printer, router, and iPhone to refresh network settings.
- Remove Obstacles: Ensure there are no large metal objects or barriers between your router and your printer that could obstruct the signal.
- Check Firewall Settings: If your network has firewall software, ensure it is not blocking the communication between your iPhone and printer.
- Verify Printer is Powered On: Make sure your printer is properly turned on and the Wi-Fi light is blinking.
