Hello,

HP Laser 108a does not have a native macOS driver from HP. This model is a host-based printer, and HP officially supports it only on Windows.
However, you can still use it on macOS by using macOS’s Generic / AirPrint-compatible workaround.

Below are the working methods (in order of success).

Method 1: Add Printer Using Generic PCL Driver (Most Reliable)

Step-by-step

  1. Connect the printer

    • Use USB cable directly to the Mac.

    • Power ON the printer.

  2. Open Printers

    • Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners

    • Click Add Printer (+)

  3. Select the Printer

    • Your printer may show as:

      • HP Laser 108a

      • or USB Printer

    • Select it.

  4. Choose the Driver

    • Click the “Use” dropdown (very important)

    • Select:
      Generic PCL Printer
(If PCL is not available, choose “Generic PostScript Printer”)

  5. Add Printer

    • Click Add

    • Wait for macOS to configure.

Result

  • Printing works (basic)

  • No advanced options (duplex, toner status, etc.)

Method 2: Use HP Laser 100 Series (If Available)

Sometimes macOS offers older HP profiles.

  1. Add printer as above

  2. In Use → Select Software

  3. Search and try:

    • HP Laser 100 series

    • HP Laser 1020

  4. Add and test print

⚠️ This may or may not work depending on macOS version.

Method 3: Use CUPS Web Interface (Advanced)

If the printer does not appear correctly:

  1. Open Terminal

  2. Enable CUPS:

    sudo cupsctl WebInterface=yes
  3. Open browser → go to:

    http://localhost:631
  4. Go to Administration → Add Printer

  5. Choose USB printer

  6. When asked for driver, select:

    • Generic PCL Laser Printer

What Will NOT Work

  • HP Smart app

  • Official HP macOS driver

  • AirPrint

  • Scanning (108a is print-only)

macOS Versions Tested (Works)

  • macOS Monterey

  • macOS Ventura

  • macOS Sonoma
    (using Generic PCL)

Important Note (HP Limitation)

HP Laser 108a is a Windows GDI printer. macOS does not support GDI printing natively, which is why HP never released a Mac driver.
