Trying to print from my Mac laptop and iPhone to My envy 7640. It prints fine from the letter tray but not the 4x6 tray. It will shoot out blank photo paper and then tell me to load paper when there is paper already loaded. The hp smart app does not even give me an option for the 4x6 tray.

Hi @Blueye

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the situation clearly. It’s understandably frustrating when the printer ignores the photo tray and misfires blank sheets—especially when everything else prints fine.

Let’s walk through a few steps that can help get the 4x6 tray working properly from both your Mac and iPhone.

Step 1: Verify Paper Loading

Ensure the photo paper is properly loaded into the photo tray:

  1. Remove any plain paper from all trays.
  2. Load the photo paper with the print side down into the photo tray.
  3. Adjust the paper guides to rest against the edges of the photo paper.

Step 2: Check Printer Settings

Verify the printer settings to ensure they match the loaded paper size:

  1. On the printer control panel, swipe the screen and touch the Setup icon.
  2. Select Paper Settings and verify if the correct paper size and type are selected for the photo tray.

Step 3: Adjust Print Settings on Mac and iPhone

On Mac:

  • Go to Print Photos in the HP Smart app, select your photo, click More settings, and ensure the paper size is set to 4x6.
  • Check if the paper tray option matches the tray for your loaded paper.

On iPhone:

  • Use the HP Smart app, tap the Print photos tile, and ensure settings are adjusted for 4x6 paper.

Step 4: Update Printer Firmware and HP Smart App

Ensure both your printer firmware and HP Smart app on your Mac and iPhone are up-to-date. Software updates can resolve compatibility issues.

Step 5: Print a Test Page

Try printing a test page to verify if the printer hardware functions correctly:

  1. Load plain white paper into the input tray.
  2. On the printer control panel, swipe left, touch the Setup icon, then touch Reports.
  3. Select Printer Status Report to print a report.

Step 6: Reset the Printer

Resetting the printer can resolve intermittent issues:

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  3. Wait for 60 seconds, then reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet and the printer.

Let me know how it goes after trying these steps. You're clearly doing everything right—just a few more tweaks and we’ll get that photo tray working as expected.
