HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Recently did a "clean"  install of Windows 10.

Printer driver ( Full_Webpack-40.15.1230-EN7640_Full_Webpack.exe ) does NOT contain "Scan to RTF" option.

When I had Windows 7 I had to install a driver from HP OfficeJet 8710, but that driver has been updated to remove the OCR capability.

Hi @paulp575,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're looking for OCR (Optical Character Recognition) functionality for your HP Envy 7640 printer on Windows 10 (64-bit). Since the standard driver you've installed doesn't include the "Scan to RTF" option, and the previous workaround with the HP OfficeJet 8710 driver no longer works, here are a few steps you could take:

  • Check for Updated Drivers: Visit the HP support website and check if there are any updated drivers specifically for your printer model that might include OCR functionality. Sometimes, manufacturers release updates that add new features or fix compatibility issues.
  • Compatibility Mode: Since you mentioned using a workaround with the HP OfficeJet 8710 driver in the past, you might try installing an older version of the driver in compatibility mode. Sometimes, older drivers retain functionality that has been removed in newer versions. To install in compatibility mode, right-click on the driver installation file, select "Properties," go to the "Compatibility" tab, and choose an older version of Windows that the driver was designed for.
  • Utilize Windows 10 Built-in OCR: Windows 10 has a built-in OCR feature accessible through various applications like OneNote or Paint. Try scanning your document using the HP Envy 7640 scan function within these applications and see if there's an option for OCR.
  • HP Smart App: Download and install the HP Smart app from the Microsoft Store. This app offers scanning functionality and might integrate with Windows' OCR features for text extraction.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Here's my responses to your items:

1. Check for Updated Drivers: No updated drivers available.

2. Compatibility Mode: Doesn't apply in my situation.

3. Utilize Windows 10 Built-in OCR: Can't find any scan to RTF options from the printer.

4. Utilize Windows 10 Built-in OCR: - Can't find anything that scans to RTF.

5. HP Smart App: ? ? ?

To me the best solution would be to download the HP OfficeJet 86710 driver. However, the driver posted on the HP webiste is dated  May 26, 2022 and states  the following note in the "Fix and Enhancements" section: "Repackaged without Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Functionality". I don't know which driver I previously installed. If I could find an older driver that specifically states it includes OCR function, that would solve my problem.

At one time whicl searching/snooping around the HP website I thought I saw an optio nto FTP older printer drivers, but am unable to find that again.
