Hello,

I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 and the OCR feature was available on HPScan with Windows10. Now I switched to Windows 11 with a new HP computer but the OCR feature disappeared from HPScan (Same printer, same network and still available on the old computer). What can I do to reactivate this feature ?

Hi @JMY49,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

To help you reactivate the OCR feature for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 on your new HP computer with Windows 11, follow these step-by-step troubleshooting instructions:

Step 1: Check HP Scan Software Version

Open HP Scan on the New Computer:

  • Go to your desktop and look for the HP Scan app. If you don't see it, search for it using the Windows search bar.

Verify Software Version:

  • Check if the HP Scan software is the latest version compatible with Windows 11. To do this, click on the app's menu (often shown as three dots or lines), then go to About or Help > Check for Updates.

Step 2: Install Full Feature Software

Visit the HP Support Website:

  • Go to the HP Support website.
  • Enter your printer model (HP OfficeJet Pro 8610) and select your operating system (Windows 11).

Download Full Feature Software:

  • Download and install the Full Feature Software and Driver package for your printer. This package often includes additional functionalities like OCR that may not be present in the basic driver installed automatically by Windows.

Step 3: Enable OCR in HP Scan

Open HP Scan:

  • Launch HP Scan after the full software installation.

Access Scan Settings:

  • Start a new scan. Look for Scan Settings or Advanced Settings.
  • Check if there is an option for OCR or Text Recognition in the settings menu.

Select OCR Output:

  • If OCR is available, select it as the output format (like searchable PDF or editable text).
  • Save these settings, and try scanning a document to test if OCR is functioning.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @JMY49,

Please find the remaining steps below.

Step 4: Install HP OCR Add-On (If Not Included)

  1. HP OCR Add-On:
    • If the OCR option still does not appear, you might need an additional OCR software component.
    • Search the HP Support website or HP Scan software settings for an OCR add-on or Text Recognition Add-on. Install it if available.

Step 5: Restart Devices

  1. Restart Your Computer and Printer:
    • Restart both your new HP computer and the OfficeJet Pro 8610 printer.
    • This can help refresh any connections and load the new software settings.

Step 6: Test Scan to OCR

Test OCR Feature:

  • Open HP Scan and attempt to scan a document using the OCR feature. Choose a format that supports OCR, such as PDF (Searchable) or Rich Text.

Check Scan Output:

  • Verify if the scanned document is searchable or editable to confirm OCR is working.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, you may need to seek further assistance from HP Phone Support for a specific OCR software recommendation compatible with Windows 11.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Thank you for this long reply.

I updated HP Scan to the latest version (63.4.0) but when launched with the printer on, it says “Péripherique d’imagerie HP introuvable’

The HP Support search engine does not understand “OCR add-on” nor “Text Recognition Add-on”

The HP Support suggested to use HP Smart which I did. There is an option to scan and it worked (although with a totally different UI) but again no OCR available.

The HP Support also suggested to install HP Universal Scan (Full_Webpack-63.4.6169-SJ0001) but It cannot find the printer on the network although it is connected (ethernet) and fully operational (print and scan) on both computers (Win10 and Win11).

Is there a way to just transfer what works on the W10 computer to the W11 one ?

Before finding a true solution, I finally opened Word, started dictation mode and read aloud the text to be "scanned". This is a ridiculous workaround for pure text but of no uses for figures tables !
