HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I've been enrolled in Instant Ink since I purchased this printer and it's this service that has bricked my printer.  I forgot my admin password for EWS and am stuck with "Cartridge cannot be used until the printer is enrolled in instant ink" - I tried to enter the secret menu but the printer is not letting me or I am doing something wrong.  The printer shows up in Instant Ink but is offline.  Its currently connected via ethernet cable cuz wifi wont connect, I cannot get it past the admin password issue.

I need to fully reset the printer to erase this **bleep** admin password.  I don't care if I lose everything as its all backed up.

Final update: I fixed my printer with a caveat.  I purchased regular (non-instant ink) cartridges and was able to bypass the Instant-Ink bricking of my printer.  It functions normally but will need tech support's help to re-enroll back into Instant Ink.

Thank you very much for the useless steps, as I told you, the only way to fix this machine is the diag menu which I had to reach on my own.  Next time I will follow my own advice and purchase extended warranty on my HP machines.  It is clear to me now that HP loves to waste time with nonsensical steps that do absolutely nothing but to infuriate the customer.

Hi @Ressikan,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I see that you are facing an issue with your printer that has an ink cartridge error.

A) Please follow the steps below to perform a power drain.

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

C) If the issue still persists, Refer to the step "How do I fix cartridge errors associated with printer enrollment?" from this link to further troubleshoot.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day
