We were gifted two brand new Pro 8020 a few years ago.  One was set aside for future use and one was used for my husbands medical business.  During that time, he had run out of ink and used the original ink cartridges from the second printer.

Upon opening my art studio this year, we decided to use the second printer.  I used GENUINE HP cartridges purchased at BJ's wholesale club.   Now I am sitting here held hostage by HP because I do not have the original ink cartridges (and yes - it IS being held hostage for a printer WE own, not HP).

I have read through the cut and paste responses to other people in the forum.  Do NOT post them to me.  Post a solution, period.   Maryland has a consumer protection department and I will not hesitate to contact them to help resolve the issue

Hi,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

It sounds like you are experiencing an issue where the printer is not recognizing the new genuine HP cartridges because the initial setup requires the use of "setup" cartridges that come with the printer in the box. These setup cartridges are designed to initialize the printer properly.

Check Compatibility:

  •  Ensure that the cartridges you are using are compatible with the HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 series. Sometimes genuine cartridges could be the right fit for the model but not for the specific series due to regional differences or series specificities.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it for a few minutes, and then turn it back on. This can sometimes clear errors and allow the printer to recognize new cartridges.

HP Instant Ink:

  • Check if your printer is registered under HP's Instant Ink program. Sometimes printers enrolled in this program require specific cartridges related to that service.

Take care and have an amazing day!
