Hi @PSKlitzke,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're encountering an error while trying to communicate with the scanner on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 printer, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve the issue. Here's a list of steps you can follow.

Check Physical Connections:

  • Ensure that all cables connecting the printer to the computer are securely plugged in.
  • If you are using a wireless connection, make sure that the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.

Restart Devices:

  • Power off both the printer and the computer.
  • Wait for a few minutes, then power on the printer and the computer.

Update Drivers:

  • Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your computer. You can download the latest drivers from the HP official website.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • HP provides a tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor, which can automatically diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems. You can download it from the HP support website and run it to check for any issues.

Check Scanner Settings:

  • On the printer control panel, navigate to the settings related to scanning.
  • Ensure that the scanning settings are configured correctly.

Firewall and Antivirus:

  • Your firewall or antivirus software may be blocking the communication between the computer and the scanner. Temporarily disable the firewall or antivirus and check if the issue persists.

Reinstall Software:

  • Uninstall the printer software from your computer.
  • Download and install the latest software from the HP website.

Check for Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service:

  • Ensure that the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service is running. You can check and start the service by following these steps:
    • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
    • Type "services.msc" and press Enter.
    • Locate the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service, right-click on it, and select "Start" if it's not already running.

Network Issues:

  • If you're using a network connection, check for any network issues that might be affecting communication between the devices.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
