My OfficeJet 4650 came with OCR. IRIS OCR is on the HP OfficeJet CD and I have used this feature to scan printed documents and save them as RTF files on many occassions. However after a recent HP software update the option of scanning and saving as editable text (OCR) still appears in the menu but after the scan is completed I now get an error message, "The HP scan application was unable to save the file to the specified location". How do I fix this?

Hi,
Right click the Start menu and select Programs and Features.
Uninstall the IRIS OCR application.
Next insert the disk.
if you have installed the software from hp.com access its installation folder as following, else right click the disk, select Browse and skip to the next step.
Click the Start button and type %temp% into the search bar, then open the shown Temp folder.
Open the latest HP installation folder which begins with 7z (e.g. 7zs1234)
Next Open the Optional folder.
Locate IrisOCR.msi, right click it and select Install to reinstall IRIS OCR.
Now rebnoot your PC, try scanning to editable text and check again.

Shlomi, thank you for your support and advice. I have both the original CD and I also have the current HP-All in One complete software package which I downloaded from HP.com.
I could not find a path to install only the IRIS OCR using the downloaded software package, it kept defaulting to my User/Local/AppData/Temp directory tree looking for a temporary directory that does not exist.
But, I am sure your instruction to uninstall the IRIS OCR from the control panel was the key I needed.
I went back to the oringal HP DVD and then I copied the IRISOCR.msi and the IRISOCR.cab to ta temporary directory on my hard drive as it would not run from the CD for some reason. Then RIGHT click, select INSTALL on the menu.
It reinstalled the OCR quickly without any interruptions or errors. Now the HP scan operates correctly, I can once again save scanned documents as RTF or PDF, etc. I fell much better, thank you for your help.
