Hello, I have been unable to successfully duplex print using the default Windows 10 driver. Is there a way to get this printer to correctly do duplex printing with Windows 10?
The otherwise trusty old printer has the duplex accessory unit installed and selected in the printer properties. Whatever printer preferences I have tried, the second page always come out printed upside-down (I would be stapling pages together in the upper-left corner of the paper).
It use to work before I had to re-install the printer and driver. I had saved a legacy driver where some attempts did correctly do duplex printing, but would interrupt with other errors.

Hi @ralpheburns,
Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Verify Printer and Driver Installation
Ensure that the printer is installed correctly and is recognized as having duplex (two-sided) printing capabilities.
- Open the Devices and Printers window:
- Press Win + R, type control printers, and hit Enter.
- Right-click on your printer and choose Printer properties.
- Under the Advanced tab, check that the correct driver is selected. If it shows the default Windows driver, this could be the problem.
- Update Printer Driver:
- Go to the printer manufacturer’s website (e.g., HP, Canon, etc.), and download the latest driver for your printer model.
- Uninstall the existing driver via Device Manager > Printers and reinstall the new driver you downloaded.
Configure Duplex Printing in Printer Preferences
Sometimes, duplex printing can behave unexpectedly if the settings aren’t configured properly in the printer preferences.
- Open Printer Properties > Preferences > Finishing or Layout.
- Check Duplex Settings:
- Make sure Print on Both Sides or Two-Sided Printing is selected.
- Try selecting the Flip on Long Edge or Flip on Short Edge option depending on how the printer is supposed to flip the pages.
Set Correct Binding Options
If the second page is printing upside down, it's possible that the binding option is set incorrectly, causing pages to be flipped inappropriately.
- Go to Printer Preferences or Printer Properties.
- Look for an option related to Binding or Orientation.
- Long Edge Binding: This is typically used for portrait orientation.
- Short Edge Binding: This is used for landscape orientation.
Test with Different Applications
To rule out application-specific issues:
- Try printing from different applications (e.g., Word, PDF Reader, etc.) to see if the problem persists across all programs.
- When printing from a PDF, make sure that the duplex settings in the PDF reader (like Adobe Reader) are also set correctly.
Clear Print Spooler
The print spooler might have a corrupted job that is interfering with duplex printing. Clear it:
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler in the list, right-click it, and select Stop.
- Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete any files in that folder.
- Go back to the Print Spooler service and click Start to restart it.

Check Duplex Accessory Installation
You mentioned that the duplex accessory is installed, but let’s double-check that Windows has recognized it properly:
- Printer Properties: Go to Devices and Printers, right-click your printer, and select Printer Properties.
- On the Device Settings tab, verify that the duplex unit is enabled.
- If you see any error message or an incorrect option here, reinstalling the duplex unit or reconnecting it might be necessary.
Reset Printer Settings to Default
If previous configurations or settings are causing issues, it might help to reset the printer settings back to default:
- Check if your printer’s control panel has a “reset” or “restore default settings” option.
- In the Printer Properties, try resetting all the settings to default and configure duplex printing again.
Check for Printer Firmware Update
Occasionally, printer firmware updates can resolve unexpected printing behavior:
- Visit the manufacturer’s website, search for your printer model, and check if any firmware updates are available.
- If an update is available, follow the instructions to update your printer's firmware.
Use the Legacy Driver (with Caution)
If you have an older driver that worked before, you may need to revert to it temporarily, despite the interruption errors.
- Uninstall current driver via Device Manager > Printers.
- Install the legacy driver you saved, making sure that it is the correct one for your printer model.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue

The current Windows 10 driver does not correctly support duplex printing on that printer. There is no combination of choices to correctly orient the pages right-side up (flip long edge). What I prefer is a legacy driver. Can you point me to one?

I have already tried both of these:
(1) HP Print and Scan Doctor - no issue found to resolve
(2) Windows Built-in Printer Driver - this is the problem! When I did a driver upgrade, the correct page orientation for duplex printing was destroyed.
Please provide the legacy driver!

Once a product reaches end of life, HP does no further development on that device. As your printer is at least 18 years old I can state with certainty that it is EOL. The last driver pack I see posted was for Windows XP.
If I was in your position this is what I would try. Download the new Smart Universal Printer Driver and try that. I have had some success with dated printers using this driver. Offered with no guarantee.
