I've reinstalled drivers several times following HP instructions. I can print but cannot scan from my iMac using my HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One printer.
Thanks, Joyce 8266

Hi @Joyce8266,
I went through your post and I understand you are unable to scan using HP Drivers and HP smart App and receiving an error driver missing.
I'd like to help.
Uninstall HP printer software
1. Click Finder in the Dock.
2. In the menu bar, click Go, click Applications, and then open the HP or Hewlett Packard folder.
a) If HP Uninstaller is in the folder, double click it, and then follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the software.
b) If HP Uninstaller is not in the folder, continue to the next step.
3. Click and drag the HP or Hewlett Packard folder to the Trash icon in the Dock.
4. In the menu bar, click Go, click Go to Folder, type /Library/Printers, then click Go.
The Printers folder opens.
5. Click and drag the HP or Hewlett Packard folder to the Trash icon in the Dock.
6. Restart the Mac.
7. Right-click or Ctrl + click the Trash icon, and then select Empty Trash.
And then reinstall the printer full-featured drivers from software and drivers page
If the issue persists, Add the AirPrint printer to the Mac printer queue
Confirm you are using AirPrint by adding the printer in System Preferences.
-
Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
Figure : Example of the Printers & Scanners window
-
Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, and then do one of the following steps.
-
If your printer is listed, remove and re-add the printer to confirm it is set up for AirPrint. Click the printer name, click the minus sign
to delete the printer, click the plus sign
, click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name and then continue to the next step.
-
If your printer is not listed, click the plus sign, click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, and then continue to the next step.
-
If your printer is not listed in the Add Printer or Scanner window, go to the Frequently asked questions in this document to resolve connection issues, try to add the printer again, and then continue to the next step.
-
-
Confirm AirPrint or Secure AirPrint displays in the Use or Print Using menu, and then click Add.
Figure : AirPrint displays in the Use menu
-
Open a document or photo, click File, and then click Print.
Start scans from the Print & Scan or Printers and Scanners window or from Image Capture when using AirPrint.
-
Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
-
Click Scan, and then click Open Scanner. If the Scan button is not available, open Image Capture from the list of Applications, which also supports scanning.
Figure : Click Scan in the Printers & Scanners window
-
In the Scanner window, click Show Details.
-
After the overview scan completes, change any settings, and then click Scan.

Hi Jay,
Thanks for helping me to resolve my scanning issue. I removed the printer that was automatically added after the software install because the scanner wasn't available. After deleting that printer then manually adding my printer in Printer & Scanners, I powered the printer off and on and both printer and scanner are working. I appreciate your advice to remove printers from the Library/Printers folder. There were many apps in that folder that I never used.
Thank you so much!
Joyce
