OfficeJet Pro 7740 - HP drivers never find the printer on ethernet

I just purchased an OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer in order to get tabloid sized printing.  the 7740 is wired into our LAN.  I can print to the printer over our lan using the Microsoft generic drivers.  The HP drivers cannot find the printer.   

Our office has multiple HP printers. I can print over the network to the other printers with no problem. 

I have tried both the HP basic print driver and the full driver. Neither one can find the printer. The HP print drivers fail to find the printer whether I use the machine name (like HPABCD4F) or the static IP address. 

I can access the printer's built in webserver across the LAN, and access the printer's set up pages and have the printer generate reports.  

I've tried installing the drivers in admin mode, no change. 
I have turned off the windows firewall - no change. 

I've tried HP Print and Scan Doctor, which will eventually find the printer, if you ask it to rescan - but says it is not installed. HP Print and Scan Dr. then offers to install the full software solution, but then apparently does nothing. 

HP's Universal Print driver finds the 7740 on our network, but refuses to print to the 7740 - complaining that it is not compatible with the 7740. 

Windows 10 - 64bit. Current versions of Windows with all available updates installed. 

Come on HP. You make printers. Surely you can make a printer driver that actually works.

I managed to find a solution. 

I downloaded the HP Easy Start software to my PC.  Running Easy Start found the printer, then downloaded and installed the driver.   Also, during the actual driver installation when offered the choice between "automatic" installation or "manual" installation choose manual.   This combination of steps reliably installed the 7740 software on 4 different computers.
