Ok so I've been using my OfficeJet Pro 7740 just as a scanner for a couple of year, only printed 12 pages as I use a LaserJet to print...
It now has decided to stop working at all, as in the HP driver icon has all of a sudden stopped taking me to the Print / Scan / etc options and is now asking me to reinstall........... of course when I try and do that it can't find the printer.
Printed is connected via Ethernet is on the network as the HP Smart software finds it but of course can't scan anything for toffee as you can't seem to amend the scanned image...
Uninstalled and reinstalled the full software and of course that hasn't worked either!!!! Firmware is already the latest 2113B,
The rubbish HP Scan and Print Doctor can't even find the printer...... sack the development team there!
Also the printer has stopped recognising legit HP printer cartridges as well now, apparently N9H71A / N9H75A and N9H79A the HP ones that came with the printer are now snyde 3rd party ones that are part of some sort of continuous ink system, so at least another bug to go on the list there.
It doesn't help that I have another setup exactly the same as this somewhere else!
So anyone got any ideas of how to get back to using the proper driver for this printer as opposed to HP Smart which doesn't do the job?
Cheers

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Are you able to copy?
Uninstall and reinstall the HP Smart App.
If the issue still persists, let's do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:
Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
15.) Restart the computer.
Once done, please download and install the software from here:

Yep tried all that but can't delete ALL the HP software as still have a LaserJet running with a JetDirect card in it...
The driver reinstall and the HP Printer Update Apps STILL don't find the printer, even though it pings under 1ms (so not a IP delay or hop issue).
HP Smart can find it OK although it still says it's not installed....
It there a generic PCL3 driver to at least connect it up???

OK, so I think I may have fixed this....
If you turn on ALL the other protocols on the printer, i.e. all the ones that either you don't need / want to use or make your network insecure.... the driver actually finds the printer!!!!!
So instead of using IP or the Host Name or anything like that it seems (I'm guessing) to use the Microsoft WSD stuff to find the printer????
Not overly impressed to say the least.
Just need to stop the driver hanging now after doing lots of scans......
