I recently set up an OfficeJet Pro 7740 on a PaperCut MF print server. The PCL-3 driver that is available on the printers page does not work with our server due to being type 4. All of the universal print drivers print out gibberish. How can I get a type 3 driver for this printer?

Hi @ChrisWithWald,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're trying to set up your OfficeJet Pro 7740 on a PaperCut MF print server and need the PCL-3 driver. Let’s work together to find the best solution! Here’s what you can try to get things up and running smoothly.

To get a Type 3 driver, you’ll need to take a different path:

  1. Manually Install HP PCL 6 Drivers:
    • Go to HP’s official website and search for the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 driver downloads.
    • Look for a PCL 6 driver that is Type 3 (or a non-Type 4 driver).
    • If unavailable, try using the HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) PCL 6, but ensure it’s Type 3, which you can find under older versions.

  2. Use Windows Built-in Drivers:
    • Open Print Management (printmanagement.msc) on your print server.
    • Click on Drivers, then Add Driver and select HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (Type 3).
    • If you don’t see the right one, click Windows Update in the driver selection window and wait—it can take a while.

  3. Extract Drivers from HP Full Software Package:
    • Download the Full Feature Software for the 7740 from HP’s website.
    • Use 7-Zip or a similar tool to extract the contents.
    • Inside, look for .inf files related to the PCL 6 or Type 3 driver and manually install them through Device Manager.

  4. Check HP’s Enterprise Driver Repository:
    • Some enterprise drivers aren’t listed on the main support page but can be found on HP’s Enterprise Solutions website.
    • Searching for “HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Type 3 PCL 6 driver” might lead you to an alternative package.

Once you install the right driver, the printer should start speaking your server’s language—no more gibberish, just crisp, clear prints.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
