I am getting a "Printer Failure" error message stating "There is a problem with the printer or print system. Turn the printer Off, then On. If you continue to get this message, contact support".

The printer won't always turn off with the button, so I have tried numerous hard resets. When the printer turns back on, it checks the systems ("Checking the printer. Please wait..."), the ink carriage moves to the left and then back to the right and then the error message appears again. Since the ink carriage is no longer accessible and I can't seem to move it easily, I can't remove the ink cartridges or clean them, which I saw as a follow-up recommendation if the hard reset doesn't work.

I've recently changed the color ink cartridges, but I've successfully printed with them since installing them. Also, this error message came up once before I changed the cartridges, but I was able to clear it after a 2 or 3 hard resets. I've now tried probably 10 resets this time around.

S.O.S. What should I do?

Hi @dmsprnts,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can certainly understand how frustrating it is when the printer is caught in a startup loop and never reaches a ready state, especially after multiple power resets.

From what you've described, the printer begins its startup sequence, performs the internal checks, the carriage moves normally, and then stops with the "Printer Failure" message. Since you've also mentioned that the issue occurred once before and is now happening consistently, we'd like to gather a bit more information to help determine whether this is related to the print system, firmware, or a hardware component.

Could you please help us with the following?

  • Share a photo of the printer display showing the exact error message.
  • If an error code (for example, beginning with letters or numbers) appears anywhere on the screen, please let us know the complete code.
  • Have you noticed any unusual noises, such as grinding or clicking, while the printer is starting up?
  • Is the printer connected by USB or Wi-Fi, or does the error appear even when all cables except the power cord are disconnected?

In the meantime, please try these steps:

  1. Perform a power reset
    • Turn the printer off.
    • Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet.
    • Wait at least 60 seconds
    • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors or power strips if possible).
    • Turn the printer back on.

  2. Disconnect external cables
    • If a USB cable or Ethernet cable is connected, disconnect it so only the power cable remains attached.
    • Restart the printer and check whether the same error appears.

  3. Check for carriage movement
    • During startup, watch whether the carriage moves freely from left to right before the error appears.
    • If the carriage stops abruptly or you hear abnormal noises, please let us know.

  4. Attempt to access the ink cartridges
    • If the printer reaches a point where the carriage becomes accessible, remove and reinstall each ink cartridge, ensuring each one is fully seated.
    • If the carriage remains locked because the printer never completes startup, please don't try to force it, as this could damage the carriage mechanism.

Based on your description, because the printer completes part of its initialization before displaying the error, this could indicate an issue with the printer's internal startup process or print system. The photo of the error message and any error code will help us narrow down the cause and provide the most appropriate next steps.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
