I'm in the same situation as TMG323 from this conversation:

I bought my OfficeJet Pro 8610 from the US, and bought HP original US cartridges.

I used the Virtual Agent as far as possible, and then it directed me to contact a real HP rep.  When I click the link, I am confronted by a messagebox that says: "This printer's warranty expired in 2015" (1 year after I bought it).  So if HP isn't going to support it, I should be able to use any printer cartridge I want to.  I bought legit HP original printer carts and still get this error.

If you have bought the printer and the ink cartridges in the same region and still getting this error, kindly perform the steps mentioned in this document.
