My officejet 5255 is giving a “use setup cartridge error” I was not provided setup cartridges for this printer. I have compatible HP branded instant ink eligible cartridges which should work according to the troubleshooting. But I am still getting this error. Can someone please assist. Thanks!

Hi @jgrowney,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
I understand how that “Use Setup Cartridge” error must feel, especially when you’ve already purchased HP-branded Instant Ink eligible cartridges.
Could you please confirm:
- The cartridge numbers you’re using (for example, HP 63 or HP 65).
- Whether this is the very first time you’re setting up the printer, or if it was working previously with other cartridges.
Here are a few steps you can try in the meantime:
- Power cycle the printer: Turn it off, unplug the power cord for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and restart.
- Check cartridge seating: Remove both cartridges, gently wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth, and reinsert them firmly until they click into place.
- Update firmware: If the printer has been connected to Wi-Fi, check for firmware updates via the printer’s control panel. Sometimes updates resolve cartridge recognition issues.
- Reset printer settings: From the printer menu, look for “Restore Defaults” or “Reset Printer.” This can clear setup errors.
I hope this helps.
