The scanner on my Officejet 7740 is jammed on the ADF. If you lift the top cover when scanning or copying you will see that the scanner light remains beneath the section meant for the ADF instead of moving across the flatbed.

I normally use the HP Scan Assistant software to scan a collection of documents (A4 & A3) and save them as one PDF. But the scanner now only scans the ADF, even when its the flatbed loaded. I've switched the options in the source from "document feeder if loaded" to "flatbed" and it still scans the ADF.

I've tried hard resetting it and it is still happening.

The last time this happened, I updated the printer's firmware and it started working perfectly but there is no new update so I can not update the firmware again.

Please help.

@Chuka_LFC,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are facing issues scanning from the flatbed.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

Are you able to make a copy from the flatbed?

Meanwhile, I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

Clean the plastic and glass strips inside the document feeder with a soft, lint-free cloth sprayed with glass cleaner.

NOTE:

Some printers ship with a document feeder cleaning cloth. If you have the cloth, load it into the document feeder and start a scan job to clean the scanner mechanism.

  1. Turn the printer off, disconnect the power cord, and remove the battery if your printer has one.

  2. Depending on your printer model, open any top cover, document feeder tray, and scan document feeder cover.

  3. Remove any debris such as bits of paper or paper clips from inside the document feeder.

  4. Spray a soft, lint-free cloth with glass cleaner, then wipe the scanner glass and the white strip on the underside of the document feeder until clean, dry, and streak-free.

       CAUTION:

    To protect the interior printer parts, do not spray the cleaner directly on or into the printer.

  5. Completely close any covers and trays that you opened.

  6. Reconnect the power cord, reinstall the battery if necessary, then turn on the printer.

  7. Load the original document or photo, then try to scan. Make sure the original document or photo is in good condition and free of tears, creases, folds, staples, or tape.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

@The_Fossette

Thanks. I'll follow your instructions and see if it helps.

To answer your question, No, the Flatbed does not make copies as well. If I try to copy a document/photo, the paper comes out blank.

Basically the mechanism that scans or copies is stuck beneath the Document Feeder Constantly, thats why I think its a firmware malfunction.
