I all just wondering if anyone else has this issue. Bought the Officejet 9730e with the hopes of being able to print A4 and A3 at home. Unfortunately, even though it’s advertised as an A3 (11x17”), both trays are only around 15 inches long making it impossible to print a regular size A3 piece of paper. There are multiple stickers and engravings on the trays saying (11x17”), however it would be absolutely impossible to do so as the tray is only 15” long. Wondering if anyone else has this issue, or if they’ve put the wrong tray in? Would appreciate any advice!

Hi @Elemtea,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP OfficeJet 9730e printer trays are not fitting 11x17" (A3) paper even though the printer is advertised as A3-capable. Let’s go through some points to clarify and troubleshoot this.

a. Check the Paper Tray Orientation

The OfficeJet 9730e supports A3 / 11x17” in the main input tray, but it may require adjusting the paper guides to their maximum extension.

Make sure the tray is fully extended, and the guides are set to the edges of the paper slot.

Some users find that the rear input or manual feed tray is used for A3 printing instead of the main tray.

b. Paper Size Settings in Software

When printing A3, ensure the printer driver is set to A3 / 11x17” in both Windows / macOS print settings.

Incorrect software settings can prevent the printer from accepting larger paper even if physically possible.

c. Check for Optional Trays

Some HP models allow an optional paper tray to handle larger sheets.

Verify in the spec sheet for the 9730e if an optional tray is required for full 11x17” capacity.

d. Verify the Tray Model

It’s possible the printer was shipped with a standard 11x14” tray by mistake.

Compare the tray part number on your printer with the official HP specs:
 - HP part numbers and documentation list the supported tray lengths for A3 / 11x17”.

If your tray is indeed shorter than official specifications, contact the seller or HP to confirm it’s the correct tray.

e. Test with Rear or Manual Feed

Many users print A3 by loading the paper into the rear manual feed slot, which supports longer sheets even if the main tray is slightly shorter.

Check the printer menu for Paper Type / Paper Size → Manual Feed / Rear Tray.

I hope this helps.

Do you see the blue lever in the right hand corner labeled 11x17?  Push the lever and extend the length of the tray.  This will allow for the paper to fit.  When you re-insert the tray it will not be flush anymore, but it will work.
