A HP Rep contacted me again to see if my printer suddenly stopped making noise and to let me know the replacement they are sending me is delayed. I told her about all these posts and that I doubted a new printer would be any different since so many others are sudenly having the same problem. She said if it were a widespread problem she would be informed about it. I suggested she check out this thread on their site. She didn't seem to understand what I was saying and resumed talking about my replacement. Doesn't seem like HP understands. If they don't resolve the problem my unopened replacement is going to get returned to Costco as soon as it arrives.

Hi,
If the noise is a nuisance, you can try to switch off the printer when not in use. Alternatively, you can use the “Schedule Printer On/Off” feature found in the “Eco” menu to turn on/off the printer at scheduled times.
If these options do not work for you, you may want to contact HP support centre for further assistance.

Greetings Intern,
HP tech support based in India has never hear of this issue.
Your forum signature says that you are an HP employee....would you know or be able to find out how to return the firmware to it's earlier state prior to the update?
I have no idea who else to ask, short of waiting on a replacement printer which will most likely have the same issue.
Thanks

I just spent an hour with HP through "chat". I let them know about the discussion thread but they led me through the different diagnostic checks without any success getting rid of the whine. They are sending me a printer replacement. I mentioned several times this was a problem for others and the customer service rep told me would pass that along. I don't really want to replace my printer as I just purchased it new in September and it's only been used approx 10 times/month. I probably won't receive a new printer but instead a refurbished one. Doesn't seem equitable to me. 😞

Greetings,
I just received an email from HP that my replacement printer is now delayed until June 6.
All HP would have to do is send me the original firmware and instructions on how to load it to solve my issue.
Instead, they are going to eventually send me a new printer, which will most likely have the same problem, and I will return my priginal one to Costco so they in effect would have gone through 4 units on my account.
They must have a lot of dough built into each one of these to account for all these returns....

I think it's actually a fax negotiation noise.
I get a message on my 6830 which says a phone cord has been detected, even though it doesn't have one plugged in. This only started to happen recently, so presumably with the recent firmware upgrade.
If I actually plug in an analog phone line, the noise changes to a more continuous stream of fax music and the LED stops blinoing and just stays on at about half brightness. If I then remove the phone line, the noise goes crazy, exactly the same as when you disconnect a fax machine in the middle of a transmission.
Obviously there's a bug in the new firmware around the build in fax capability and it's detection of a phone line.

@seanann
So why not just keep yours for now ?
I have the same issue and like everyone else it started with the latest firmware update, so I think we can assume that's the cause 😕
Since they haven't released a new version since the one that caused this, I'd say it's worth waiting for at least one more update to see if they can get it right. I know it sucks - I keep mine unplugged until needed now so I don't lose my mind listening to that noise, but I think that's a better alternative than exchanging for something that will likely have the same problem, and is very possibly in worse shape than what you have.
Now if it takes a month or more for a new version maybe start looking for alternatives, but I'm willing to hold off for at least a little while longer. And the more people that log the complaint, the more likely it will be that someone who can actually fix it take notice.
Just my 2cents.

I have the problem with my 6835 as well, purchased from Costco last month.
Printer seems to work fine, but I noticed this noise while working a few weeks ago. Not quite a whine, but certainly noticeable and annoying while trying to work. If I wake the printer up, the noise stops. This problem started recently.
It's so troubling that HP support ignores all of this valuable data collected by cutomers, and continues to say they are unaware of the issue if you call. What a waste of time and money for all
