Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently ran out of my black ink on an HP Officejet Pro 6978. I discovered that an automatic update has blocked all generic type inks. The printer is useless unless I purchase original HP ink that is being forced by HP. We have been using the same generic black ink for many years on our printer. Our company owns mostly HP printers and all HP laptops. Due to this unfortunate decision by HP, we are pursuing changing all of our equipment. Who's to say what HP could force

next ?????

I have read many forums that has expressed concern over the decision to block non HP ink. The answer is always to expect a private message from HP.

If there is a fix , why can't it be shared to the public?

Hi @MWoolcock,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I'd like to help

  • Update the printer firmware- Download available firmware updates from the HP website
  • With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
  • The third party ink cartridges will work. But there are many cartridges in the market which is refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why its not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.

Note: For printers manufactured prior to December 1, 2016 dynamic security will not be enabled by the firmware.

Please note that HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP cartridges.

You may refer to this document -  HP Printers - Dynamic Security Enabled Printers

I hope that answers your concern adequately.

"Download and update firmware" is totally ignoring the original question from OP.

Is there a way to enable use of generic ink in an HP printer in 2022?

Did you get an answer to your problem?

I'm in the market for a printer, but a fair number of people are reporting the same problem... Before I buy an HP printer, I'd like to know that I can use generic ink.
