Before I saw the reply from Praveenbe at HP, I finally got in touch with a real HP person who was extremely patient and helpful.  It appears that the embedded web browser had become disconnected from HP's servers.  We accessed the printer by inputting the IP address into my browser and then logged in to the printer using the printer PIN. Then we reset the network connections and the link between printer and server was restored.  So all is working well.  But I am not going to celebrate, nor am I marking this as problem solved.  I have been caught before!  I do not understand why the printer and the sevrer become disconnected and I am not convinced I will always be able to get them to reconnect so easily.  My view is that HP software is extremely flaky and unreliable and until I am convinced otherwise, I won't regard the problem as solved. BTW I don't believe it should be necessary to assign an IP address manually to get the printer to work reliably as Praveenbe suggests.

Hi@BillM5,

The above steps which you have sent is for restoring the network settings. There are a lot of factors involved in the disconnection. It is important to add IP address manually for devices on your network that will need to be accessed very reliably by other systems or devices on the network.

I am glad that the issue is resolved however we will value your input on the same

Hope that answers your question and you have a great day!

If a static IP address is required, I assume it is ok to configure a fixed IP address for the printer's MAC address in the DHCP server instead of hard-coding it into the printer. Please confirm.

Hi@Izzy27,

Then that looks good, we don't think issue IP address and static not required for home use, mac address and DHCP are automatic.

Let me know if you need any other assistance and I'd be happy to help 🙂
