HP Officejet Pro L7680 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Printer was working fine, then came up with a printhead error message that locks the printer with yellow ! mark.  I have changed the printheads but no luck.  sometime it says the black/yellow printhead, other times it says both printheads.  Occasionally I can get the scanner to work until the printhead error comes up and locks everything.  Is there a way to reload the printer firmware if that is the problem?

Hi @Johnuthin,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with your HP Officejet Pro L7680 printer. Firmware crashes can indeed cause unexpected errors like the one you're facing. Reloading the firmware might help resolve the problem, but it's essential to follow the correct procedure to avoid further complications.

Here's a general outline of steps you can take to attempt to reload the firmware:

  • Check HP Support: Visit the official HP support website and search for your printer model. Look for any firmware updates or downloads available for your printer. If there's a newer firmware version than what you currently have, download it to your computer.
  • Prepare Printer: Ensure that your printer is connected to your computer and turned on. It's also a good idea to make sure the printer has enough power and ink.
  • Access Printer Settings: Depending on the printer model, you might be able to access firmware updates directly from the printer's control panel. Navigate through the menu options to find the firmware update section. If your printer supports firmware updates over the network, you might also be able to initiate the update from a web browser.
  • Manual Installation: If the firmware update can't be initiated from the printer's control panel, you may need to install it manually. This typically involves connecting the printer to your computer via USB and running a firmware update utility provided by HP. Follow the instructions carefully to complete the update process.
  • Reset Printer: After updating the firmware, it's a good idea to perform a reset on the printer. This can help clear any residual errors and ensure that the new firmware is properly installed. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a reset.
  • Test Printer: Once the update and reset are complete, test the printer to see if the issue has been resolved. Print a test page and check for any error messages. If everything appears to be working correctly, you should be good to go.

If reloading the firmware doesn't resolve the issue, there may be a more significant hardware problem with the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
