My OfficeJet printer stopped working, and says it needs a software update. I downloaded the update and began the process, but get to a page about HP Product Improvement Study, there's a blank window below the two usage options, and it doesn't have any type of question/prompt - it's just a blank window that gets outlined in red when attempting to move to the next screen. So, the software update can't be completed without apparently filling out this blank window without instruction on how or what to type in.

I live in a rural area, so taking it somewhere is a bit of a chore.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I have re-downloaded the software update and am still stuck on this.

Hi @303z,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you're encountering an issue with the HP OfficeJet 5258 software update process, specifically with the HP Product Improvement Study window. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Check Your Internet Connection: Ensure that you have a stable and active internet connection. Sometimes, a poor connection can cause issues with software updates.
  • Retry the Update: If you haven't already, try restarting the software update process. Sometimes, a temporary glitch can cause issues like the one you're experiencing.
  • Update Manually: If the automatic update process is giving you trouble, consider downloading the latest software update manually from the HP website. Visit the official HP support website, search for your HP OfficeJet 5258 printer model, and look for the latest software/drivers for your operating system. Download and install it manually.
  • Disable or Configure Firewall/Antivirus: Sometimes, firewall or antivirus software can block certain parts of the update process. Temporarily disable your firewall and antivirus software (make sure to re-enable them afterward) and try the update again.
  • Clear Cache and Cookies: If you're using a web-based update method, clear your browser's cache and cookies, then try again.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Sometimes, the issue might be related to the printer's firmware. Check if there are any firmware updates available for your HP OfficeJet 5258 and apply them as well.

Remember to back up any important data or settings on your printer before attempting any major updates or changes to avoid data loss. Additionally, always ensure you are downloading software updates from the official HP website to avoid potential security risks.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
