Bought brand new HP 5255 (not bought from HP) and when I try to set up with the ink cartridges included I get an older cartridge error saying they will not work with the printer. I didn't expect something like this with a new printer. Is there a way to fix or should I try to return the printer to the online website? Thank you

Hi,
Does the error refer to the Black or Tri-Color Cartridge? a circle indicates the black, 3 dots the color one.
Could you please include a picture of the affected ink cartridge label?

Please make sure the latest firmware is installed for your printer and check fr any difference:

If the same persists, could you please take a picture of the warranty end date listed on the cartridge itself?

Hi,
The printer stops at the cartridge error and won't allow anything else to be done, so I can't get to the firmware.
The cartridge shows expiration as 10/20/2018. This is what came in the box with my new printer purchase.

I suggest contacting the retailer, as this is an older generation cartridge indeed.
From the HP Factory, this is impossible to have a printer manufactured after May 2018 with a cartridge manufactured much time prior to the printer:
