HP Officejet Pro 8600
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

After an windows update my computer is unable to start. After going through a "repair fix" the computer starts up and I get an  "other device" with a subfolder called OfficeJet Pro 8600 and no driver can be found. However, a "HP OfficeJet Pro 8600" loads just fine. What I have to do each time is (using Device Manager)  uninstall "OfficeJet Pro 8600" and all is fine. The last software program I installed was Quicken 2018. There was a problem with a printer driver not wanting to load but I think I fixed it. But after I now get this "OfficeJet Pro 8600" loading up as "Other device".

Hi! @Dewy_B, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you have connected your printer to the PC and you are getting unknown device error in device manager.

Don't worry I'm here to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Is your printer connected by wired or wireless connection?

Have you tried checking with different USB devices on your PC?

As you mentioned you have connected your printer to the PC and you are getting unknown device error in device manager.

Try the steps recommended below.

Update the driver software in Windows Device Manager.

Search Windows for device manager, and then click Device Manager in the list of results.
Click the Right arrow  next to the following entries to expand them, and then look for your printer in each list:
Printers
Print queues
Universal Serial Bus controllers
Other devices
If you see a yellow exclamation mark next to your printer or the phrase Unknown device, continue with the next step.
If you do not see your printer or a yellow exclamation mark in the list, skip to the next step to uninstall the driver.
Right-click the HP device/Unknown device entry or the entry with the  symbol, and then click Update Driver Software. The Update Driver Software - Unknown Device wizard opens.
Click Search automatically for updated driver software. Follow the on-screen instructions to refresh the device manager.
Repeat these steps for all device entries with the  symbol.

Turn off programs that run in the background

  1. Search Windows for msconfig, and then click msconfig.exe in the list of results.

If a window opens with the message Windows needs your permission to continue, click Continue to close the window.

  2. In the System Configuration window, click the General tab, click the option button beside Selective Startup, and then click the box next to Load startup items to remove the checkmark.

  3. Click the Services tab, click the Hide all Microsoft services checkbox, and then click Disable All.

       CAUTION:

Do not disable any Microsoft services.

  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.

  5. When prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

  6. When the computer turns on, a System Configuration Utility message displays on the computer. Select the Do not show this message againcheck box, and then click OK.

If the issue still persists uninstall the printer software from the root level and install the full feature printer software.

In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.

Select your HP printer.

Select Uninstall.

In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

Click on Drivers tab.

Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

Select OK.

Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.

Close Devices and Printers.

Also, if you have issues after installing the full feature printer software, try updating the basic printer drivers.

I did try the "update driver" but it could never find a driver. However, before getting your reply I went into "msconfig" and clicked on the "startup tab" and took out the checkmarks for "hpwuschd applications" and "HP Digital Imaging" (there were two of these) and all is working now.  I no longer get a 'unkn device" and everything loads fine. I appreciate the assistance. Note: My printer is connected by a USB connection.

You're most welcome.

As @A4Apollo is out of the office today, I'm replying to you.

I'm glad to know that that issue is now resolved and hope it stays that way. I truly appreciate your efforts and patience.

Cheers! 🙂
