The printer consistently crashes when printing PDF files from either Adobe Reader or PDFelement. I've rebooted, removed the printer and re-added it, updated available drivers from website, but to no avail. It just won't print a PDF. This is getting ridiculous.

What firmware revision is installed on your printer. These types of crashing errors with Adobe files is not uncommon if the firmware is not kept up to date.  The most recent firmware is 20140616, which is very old. Dealing with printers that have reached EOSL (end of support life, device is over ten years old now based on original release date) can be a challenge if software vendors make big changes to their programs and they just are not compatible anymore.

Just updated the firmware. What a convoluted process. The firmware file on HP website is an .exe program. After update, the PDF will print from Adobe Reader, but still won't from PDFelement.
