@jwires, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Printer set up!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like you're experiencing issues setting up the wireless printing feature for your HP printer. Let’s try to address this step-by-step:

Wireless Network Setup

Connect Using the HP Smart App:

  • Ensure Your Device is Connected: Start by ensuring that your mobile device is connected to your wireless network and you have the password handy.
  • Printer Setup Mode: Check if the printer is in Auto Wireless Connect (AWC) mode. This mode is usually activated when the printer is powered on for the first time; it keeps searching for the HP Smart app for two hours.
  • Set Up via HP Smart App: On iOS/Android, open the HP Smart app. Tap the Plus icon, select your printer, and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the setup.

Use Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) if Supported:

  • Confirm that both your printer and access point support WPS. Press and hold the Wireless button on your printer’s control panel and follow the instructions to connect your printer using WPS.

Revert Wireless Settings:

  • If you need to reset the wireless settings to default, press and hold the Wireless button on the control panel for about 20 seconds until the LED indicators start blinking.

Troubleshooting Wireless Printing from Computer

  • Update HP Smart: Ensure you have the latest version of the HP Smart app installed on your computer.
  • Firewalls: Temporarily disable any firewall software on your computer that might block network communication.
  • Network Connectivity: Verify the computer is on the same network as the printer.

USB Connection Workaround

While using a USB connection works as a direct interface when wireless fails, please ensure that:

  • Proper Network Configuration: Your printer is correctly connected to your network.
  • HP Embedded Web Server: Access HP Embedded Web Server via a web browser to check network settings. You may need to log in as an administrator (default ID is 'admin', no password initially).

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
