Deskjet F4200
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hi!

Two difficulties:

1. The paper in my printer got crumbled up and stuck and I pulled the sheet out in the front with some force. Only later did I find out one has to do it from the back. The whole piece did come out though.

But since then the Deskjet doesn't take in paper anymore, and after that failure the scan unit does its run, but then -after one run from left to right and back- moves again one more time to the right, and remains there, while the red Resume light blinks.

I'm thinking of taking it to a repair shop, but before maybe doing that would still try to fix it myself. So any suggestions are welcome.

2. When I try to install the software for this Deskjet from the disk, a message appears shortly saying that the current operating system is not compatible (or some wording like that) with the Deskjet software. I have Windows 8.1 and suppose that should work well with this Deskjet. Am I mistaken?

In the past on Windows 7 it worked fine, but since I have an EliteBook 850 G2 used the Deskjet wihtout intalling that extra software from the disk.

This latter difficulty is less important to me, as long as I can copy, print and scan.

I don't know if it is possible to scan and copy that on one's computer without instaling that extra software from the disk. I only used that scan function once, a long time ago, and I might have had that software on my previous notebook with Windows 7 on it.

Hello @LodeHere,

Appreciate all your efforts. Good job on isolating the issue 🙂

I am afraid that this looks like a hardware issue with the printer. HP do not have any authorised repair shops for printer. You can definitely check with the local repair shops to repair the printer, but I think it would be more cheaper for you to replace / upgrade the printer.

You can contact HP Phone support and I believe you may be eligible for a printer upgrade at some discounted price since you are an existing HP customer.

You can visit http://www.support.hp.com/contact-hp and fill in your product details to get the tech support number.

(1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.

(2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.

(3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.

(4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

If you have any troubles, let me know and I will do my best to help.

Thank you & have a great day 🙂

Hello, @LodeHere – Hope you are well 🙂

Thank you for becoming an HP Forum member. It is a great location to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others.

I understand you are facing issues with the printer. Let’s start with performing a hard reset on the printer. Follow the steps below:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle and then try making a copy.

If the issue persists, then follow the steps here: http://hp.care/2gG1HAs I understand that there is no paper stuck inside, but still I would like you to perform the steps mentioned, including the cleaning or rollers. If this helps printer to make a copy, then will see about the printer installation issue.

Let me know if that helps. Thank you & Good luck!

Cheers 🙂

Thank you for the kind reply.

I followed all your instructions to the letter, including the ones you gave a link to. But the paper still is not drawn in.

When I look in through the back I see one black roller on the left side laying on the paper I inserted from the front. When I try to print, all the normal things happen, like sounds and the scan unit moving back and forth one time, but then when that roller is supposed to pull the paper in it doesn't turn. (I can see that because there is a tiny white speck of dust on it I did not remove on purpose. But all the rollers look clean.)

That one roller in touch with the paper is wider than the four black rollers I see closer up that are for guiding the paper.

In the mean time I found the needed driver for my F4072, and that was installed. So that one is solved.

("Looking for drivers? Click here" it says on the right a bit higher up in this thread. I 'm grateful for that, I had not though before that it was a driver issue.)

When I connect my notebook to the printer, and try to print a document, the same thing happens: sounds, movemnt, but no paper intake.

I'll wait for your reply. If the only solution would be to bring my Deskjet to the repair shop, I'll first contact them and give them a link to this thread via email. See what they say.

I hope a repair is possible. We'll see. :generic:

Thank you much.

It so happens that the first thing I saw after waking up my laptop this morning while I was still in bed was a message saying that you had replied, and a newsletter with special offers from the supermarket chain who has a branch just around the corner from where I live. Those offers started today.

One of the special offers was the HP Envy 5540 All-in One printer for €62,99. I got it 10 minutes after they openend shop, they only had 2, and behind me in line was a man who said he wanted one also. (They kept them in their office.) So 15 minutes after opening at 8:30 both were sold.

I'll see if my oldie but still looking like new F2440 can indeed be repaired, and for the €30 they said they charge maximum for my case. If so I'll return my new one -I have 4 weeks for that- for a full refund. Otherwise I'll keep the new one. (In the mean time I don't even remove the plastic film the box is wrapped in. Although the only condition for refund is that the printer has not been used.)

I could also follow the link you gave, to see if HP can offer me a discount in case the failing one can't be repaired. But that might not be worth the hassle for your colleagues and me, as I'm fine with the two possibilities I have already now.

I'll get back later to round this one off. Although I consider it solved as far as effective sollutions go.

Again, much thanks for your support.

It has been a few days now since I emailed that repair shop, and no reply yet. I take it as a sign not to go that way.

As it is a hardware issue -the roller that pulls the paper in is not turning- I can imagine they must take the printer appart to get in there, and maybe even replace a part. So I doubt they will charge less than €30, probably more. (Even though they had said the would not charge more. But that obviously does not include parts.) But even if without a new part and it costing what they estimated, I would have to go there, probably leave it there, go back home, and later go there again and back... and it's not close by. And all that to maybe save €32,99, and possibly less. (The new one costing me €62,99.)

And services to come to your home already start charging for just showing up without even having seen the printer... out of the question in this home user case.

Now that I have the brand new one I only have get over the nostalgy of saying "goodbye" to the still looking like new old one I've had for years, and put it by the garbage... :Crying:

But then I'll have the newest one, now even with touch screen panel on the front.

Today I finally installed my new printer! I wanted to scan a drawing and send it as an attachment by e-mail.

To my surprise I discovered that with this printer it can all be done wirelessly. I had no idea...

No more having to put my laptop in hybernation > unplug the power line > walk to my desk with the laptop > plug in another power line > wake up lapptop > plug wire from printer into laptop > print or scan. Then put laptop in hybernation again > unplug power >  etc > go back with the laptop to my easy chair in the living room.

Now I can do it all from my easy chair. Feeling spoiled...

I like it very much! Nice surprise!
