Many printing issues:
1. HP Smart only lists 3 paper size options, despite the paper tray having markings to accommodate several. I need to print on a 4x6 note card, so I keep gettin the E2 paper size mismatch error.
~ I have tried to reinstall the driver: showed that there was no driver.
~ I have tried to turn off, unplug for a couple minutes, and plug back in.
~ I have uninstalled and reinstalled HP Smart.
2. When I try to print from another app (Word, Acrobat, etc.), and have the preferences set to print on both sides, with 4x6 selected (automatically selected based on size of PDF), it prints one side and then shoots the paper out without printing the second time, and the printer shows the same E2 error. I have it set to double side in the Print section and in the page setup. I even created a custom paper size, which you can see selected in the page set up dialog box, and it still shows the error.

OS: Mac Sequoia 15.5

Hi @Malro
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thanks for laying out the details so clearly—it’s genuinely frustrating when the printer tray shows support for multiple sizes, but the software doesn’t cooperate. Let’s walk through a few steps that should help resolve the E2 paper mismatch error and restore full paper size functionality.
1. Reinstall HP Smart and Supporting Software
- Uninstall HP Smart from your Mac
- Open the Mac App Store and download the latest version of HP Smart
- Reinstall any printer utility or driver packages if prompted by HP Smart during setup
2. Check Default Printer Settings
- Go to System Settings (or System Preferences) > Printers & Scanners
- Select your printer from the list
- Click Options & Supplies
- Under the Driver tab, check that the correct driver is selected (not AirPrint)
- If AirPrint is selected, remove the printer and add it again using HP’s full software
- Confirm that standard paper sizes (Letter, A4, 4x6, etc.) are listed and accessible
3. Create and Use a Custom Paper Size
- From the Print Dialog in any app (Word, Acrobat, etc.):
- Open Paper Size > Manage Custom Sizes
- Click the “+” button
- Name the custom paper size, then set:
- Width: 4 in
- Height: 6 in
- Margins: 0 in
- Save and select this paper size before printing
4. Configure Tray Settings in Embedded Web Server
- Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer
- Open a browser and enter the printer’s IP address to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS)
- Navigate to Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management
- Verify that the tray is set to 4x6 in and Plain Paper
5. Update Printer Firmware
- Go to HP’s official page: HP Smart Tank 6001 Drivers and Firmware
- Select the closest matching macOS version (Sequoia 15.5 if not listed)
- Download and install the latest firmware update
6. Adjust Application Print Settings
- Ensure double-sided printing is turned off if printing on cards like 4x6
- In Print > Layout or Finishing, confirm that:
- Paper Size matches custom or supported dimensions
- Paper Type is set to Plain Paper
- Scaling is set to Actual Size or 100%
- For small-format cards, manual duplexing is recommended (print one side, reinsert, print second side)
7. Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer
- Unplug from power for at least 60 seconds
- Plug it back in and power on to clear internal memory errors
8. Use HP Smart Diagnostic Tools
- Open HP Smart > Settings > Printer Reports
- Use built-in tools like Print Quality Diagnostic, Paper Feed Test, or Network Check
- These may help the printer recalibrate paper size detection
If the issue persists, we can explore alternate print paths or app-specific workarounds. You’ve already done a lot of the right things—just need to nudge the system into recognizing your setup properly. Let me know how it goes.
