Hello,

I have a printer named HP ENVY 7640, I started to print envelopes 5X7 just fine, then it stopped, and every time I put envelopes in the tray, it keeps saying photo tray empty. Can anyone help please?

Hi @Mimi-7640,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue where your HP ENVY 7640 says "photo tray empty" when you're trying to print envelopes is likely due to a mismatch between the paper size or type settings and what the printer is detecting in the tray. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

Check the Paper Tray Setup

  • Ensure the envelopes are in the main tray, not the photo tray. The photo tray is designed for smaller photo paper.
  • Adjust the paper guides to snugly hold the envelopes in place.
  • Confirm that no paper is in the photo tray to avoid confusing the printer.

Adjust Printer Settings

  • Open the print settings on your computer before sending the print job.
  • Select Envelope as the paper type and set the correct size (5x7 in your case).
  • Verify that the print job is set to use the Main Tray and not the photo tray.

Printer Control Panel Settings

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Settings or Paper Handling.
  • Set the Paper Type to Envelope and select the correct size.
  • Disable the photo tray if there’s an option for paper source.

Update Printer Drivers

Outdated drivers can cause miscommunication between the printer and computer.

  • Download and install the latest drivers from the HP Support website.

Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for about 1 minute.
  • Plug it back in, turn it on, and try printing again.

Perform a Printer Firmware Update

Firmware updates can resolve bugs or glitches:

  1. Access Settings on the printer’s control panel.
  2. Navigate to Printer Maintenance or Tools.
  3. Look for Firmware Update and follow the instructions.

Test with a Different Print Job

  • Try printing a test page or a standard document to see if the issue is limited to envelopes.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
