Photosmart C7250
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After my computer was automatically updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10, I discovered that my Photosmart C7250 printer could not scan to the computer, from either software on the computer or from the printer console.  I had upgraded (?) to Windows 10 a while ago, but this was the first time I had tried to scan things.  The print function works, just not the scanning.  I can use a web browser to log into the printer and have a scan done from the browser, so the scan function does work.  It just appears that the drivers are not working.  The HP Print and Scan Doctor stated that the scan drivers were not complete and needed to be installed.  But, when it tried to install them, it crashed.

Windows update is current, so I have the latest software versions.

The printer is connected via hardwire ethernet.  I downloaded the latest driver software from the HP website and tried to install it.  It always crashes during the "checking system" part of the process (the next step would be "preparing system for installation".

I have removed all HP software for the other printers in my network, run a register clean up utility (as suggested by another post on the HP forum), and run the HP uninstall utility Uninstall_L4 multiple times.  The Unistall_L4 utility always crashes on step 10 of 12 of the Photosmart All in One uninstall, with the message "HP installer uninstall has stopped working".  I have tried this as administrator, with no difference.

There seems to be something set somewhere that is causing the HP software (both uninstall and install) to crash.  I suspect I am going to have to manually edit something, but I need to know what I have to change.

Any ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks.

OK, I was able to redownload the Photo Creations from the HP website and it installed correctly.  And, I was able to find a version of the Photosmart Essentials on CNET (http://download.cnet.com/HP-Photosmart-Essential/3000-2192_4-10324395.html).

So, I'm good to go and my problem is solved.

Thank you for all your help.

@jb20165, welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out.

I understand that you are unable to install the printer software for your HP Photosmart C7250 All-in-One Printer.

Don't worry as I have a few steps that should help fix this issue.

And here's the step by step guide for you in the links below:

1. Uninstalling the Printer Software (Windows)

2. Full Feature Software and Drivers

Let me know how that works.

I hope you have a good day ahead.

No, it does not work. As I said in the original post, the uninstall and install both crash (at the points I listed).

Hello @jb20165,

Thanks for the update.

I understand you are able to print fine. Let' try using the HP Scan and capture app to scan.

Please get the instructions and download options here: http://hp.care/2dsHSjh

Hope that helps. Let me know!

Downloaded the HP Scan and Capture app.  It does not detect the printer.  When I manually enter the ip address of the printer, it says "specified device is not found".  So no scanning.

This is not surprising.  Since I cannot install the HP drivers, I am using the generic windows 10 drivers for the printer, which I'm sure do not support scanning.  I am only using the windows drivers because I need to be able to use the printer; when I have tried to install the drivers, I have deleted the printer from the windows printer list (actually, I've tried both - trying to install with the printer using the windows drivers and with it not installed - same result).

I really think to make this work I need to solve why the installation of the drivers fail (as described in my original post).  I suspect this problem is also causing the crash of uninstall utility (crashes on step 10 of 12).  If there is a list of what the utility is doing, then maybe I can manually do the steps and see what the problem is.  Or, does it generate some sort of log file that would point to where it crashes.

Thanks.

Hello @jb20165,

Thank you for the update.

Let's try the steps below to perform a clean install. This should most likely help you install the HP drivers for your printer:

·         First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.

·         Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Photosmart printer entries and uninstall them.

·         Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.

·         Restart your computer.

·         Click the bottom-left Start button on the desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.

·         Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.

·         Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer”  – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".

·         Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says “Unknown device”.

·         Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.

·         Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.

·         Again, go to "run" window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

·         Once done you can try cleaning out your temporary files and cached files. You can try using automated applications like some cleaner software's that you can download from the internet.

·         Now restart your computer again.

·         Click on http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL30662/mp-110038-3/PS_AIO_02_Net_Full_Win_WW_140_408-5.ex... and install the software.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

Cheers 🙂

OK, that seemed to work!  I can now scan from the computer.

One thing remains.  The installation put an icon for HP Photo Creations.  Is that the replacement for the older Photoshop Essentials that originally came with the printer (that could be used for printing pictures on the printer)?  If not, does the Essentials package still exist for the new Windows (my installation got removed when I was removing all of the HP software)?

When I click on the Creations icon, it downloads the software then halts during installation with the error "Unable to complete initialization.  Please try reinstalling.  Error 80004005:1".  I don't know how to reinstall it, since it appears that it was never installed.

So, any insight on what to do next?

Thanks.

I have spent two days of very frustrating attempts to reinstall my Photosmart C7250 printer, with full software capabilites, but all I can accomplish is installing the print functions.  I cannot install the scan features.  I followed your instrutions to the letter (twice), but the installation program disappears in mid installation.  When I get to this the attached page, and select next ... poof ... no more install.  I'm ready to chunk this printer in the trash and buy another one.

Hello @lmelton,

Thanks for reaching out & I appreciate your efforts in troubleshooting the issue so far.

So, it looks like the print feature is working fine but you are unable to complete the installation and hence  not able to use the scan feature. I would suggest you use HP Scan and Capture application to scan. HP Scan and Capture is a simple application that captures photos or documents from an HP scanning device or your computer's built-in camera.  These images can be previewed, edited, saved, and shared to other applications as well.

Go to http://hp.care/2bUVkrw to download and install the Windows Scan and Capture app.

Let me know how if helps!
