HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi,

Since I enabled the embedded Firewall in my HP OfficeJet 9125e, all Instant Ink and connected services are not able to reach HP servers.

Can anyone share the HP printer Firewall rule to implement so that my printer is protected thanks to its firewall but Instant Ink (and HPe web services) are not prevented to work ?

Thanks for your help.

Hi @baloodesbois,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To resolve the issue with Instant Ink and other HP web services being blocked by the embedded firewall on your HP OfficeJet 9125e, you'll need to allow specific ports and addresses through the firewall. Here’s how you can configure the firewall to enable these services while keeping your printer protected.

Ports to Allow:

Port 443 (HTTPS): This is the standard port used for secure web traffic. Allowing this port will enable secure communication between your printer and HP’s servers.

Port 5222 (XMPP): This port is used by the HP printer to communicate with the Instant Ink service.

Port 80 (HTTP): Although less secure, this port is sometimes used by web services for non-encrypted communication. It's generally recommended to enable it only if necessary.

IP Addresses to Allow:

  • HP Instant Ink Servers: While specific IP addresses can vary, allowing communication to HP’s domains should suffice. Here are some general rules:
    • Allow outbound traffic to *.hp.com
    • Allow outbound traffic to *.instantink.com

Steps to Configure Firewall:

Access the Printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS):

  • Open a web browser on a computer connected to the same network as the printer.
  • Enter the printer’s IP address in the browser’s address bar.
  • Log in to the EWS with the administrator credentials.

Navigate to Firewall Settings:

  • Go to the Networking or Security section.
  • Locate the Firewall or Advanced Firewall Settings.

Add Firewall Rules:

  • Create a new rule allowing outbound traffic to the ports listed above.
  • Specify that this rule applies to all traffic going to the HP domains (e.g., *.hp.com and *.instantink.com).

Save and Apply Settings:

  • Save the new firewall rule and apply the settings.
  • Restart the printer if necessary.

By following these steps, your printer should be able to communicate with HP’s servers while remaining protected by the firewall.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello,

Thank you for your support.

I could indeed create the rules with the 3 ports above but could not limit them to the HP domains (e*.hp.com and *.instantink.com).

Interface is waiting for an IP adress and not a domain name ...

Any advice ?

Also, when putting the 3 ports and 'any' as allowed source, the Instank Ink service still does not see my printer live.

I of course tried to restart the printer ... Below is a screenshot of the FW rule.
