I have made a number of attempts to set up my new Smart Tank 5000 using Wi-Fi.  Without exception, I have received an error message saying, "printer not found--error code 5."  The HP Support website seems to indicate that this code indicates a "firmware error."  What does this mean, and what are my options at this point?  Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

Hi @GlamRockCowboy,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating this is. You’ve tried multiple times to set up your new HP Smart Tank 5000 over Wi-Fi, and keep getting “Printer not found – Error Code 5.” Let’s break down what this means and what you can do.

Steps to Fix

1. Check Firmware

2. Reset Network Settings

  • On the printer control panel:
    • Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons together for 5 seconds.
    • This restores network defaults.

3. Reconnect Using HP Smart

  • Make sure your device and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network (not guest).
  • Open HP app → Add Printer → Follow prompts.
  • If the app still fails, try Wi-Fi Direct
    • Enable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer.
    • Connect your device to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct SSID.
    • Complete setup.

4. Factory Reset (Last Resort)

  • Press and hold Power + Cancel for 10 seconds.
  • Reconfigure from scratch.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
