When I try to set the printer to switch off after a period of non-use, this message is shown:
"The printer will automatically turn off after a period of inactivity to help reduce energy use. This feature is automatically disabled when the printer is connected to a computer or mobile device, a network, or a fax line (if supported)."

Wouldn't any HP printer be either directly connected to a computer or via a WiFi network?

How can I get this setting to work?

@PhilP1, Welcome to HP Support Community!

The feature is disabled not when it is connected and idle but when there is any print job sent to the printer from the computer or mobile devices.

I hope that answers your concern adequately. Let me know!
