Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I have fixed the problem by doing an uninstall of the printer software and installing the full feature software. My desktop now prints. However the print and scan dr which had hung caused major problems as Ithought if I turned the pc off and then back on again it would remove the hung application. I couldnt get past the sign in page and just got a blank screen. I kept turning it off and back on again and eventually it worked properly but have no real idea how i managed to fix it .I'm closing this now thanks again.

Hi! @Foxes, Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand when you print from your printer the printer acts like printing but nothing is getting printed.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Does the issue persist when you make a copy from your printer?

Have you tried checking with a different ink cartridge?

Have you tried printing from a different application?

As you mentioned when you print from your printer the printer acts like printing but nothing is getting printed.

Whenever a print job is sent to the printer a file is created in Windows. Sometimes these files become corrupt and cause problems. To properly reset your printing environment, delete these print job files manually.
If you have any work open in the software you printing from, save your work. Your current print jobs will be lost and will need to be printed again later.
Click on Start menu to open search or press +S on your keyboard.
Type services.msc in the search box and press the enter key
Select Print Spooler from the services list.
Click Restart the service or click the restart button.
Try printing again

If the copy is working fine try the steps recommended below try the steps recommended below.

Try uninstalling the printer software from root level and install the basic printer drivers and check if it helps.

In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.

Select your HP printer.

Select Uninstall.

In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”

Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.

Type printui.exe /s and click OK.

Click on Drivers tab.

Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.

Select OK.

Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.

Close Devices and Printers.

Update the printer basic drivers and check if it helps. Link: https://hp.care/2vk3pTq

Also, update the printer drivers using windows built-in drivers. Link: https://hp.care/2xByCk4

First, to close your other instance of the Print and Scan Doctor:
Close all other programs you have open.
Press Ctrl, Alt, and Del on your keyboard at the same time.
Click on Start Task Manager.
Click on the Applications tab.
Click on the Print and Scan Doctor listed.
Click on End Task.
If you are still unable to open the Print and Scan Doctor, click on the Processes tab and do the same with anything that has HP in the name.

This should allow you to run the Print and Scan Doctor and resolve your issues.
