I have a new 8139 printer.  It’s use with hp smart demands one enter paper size both in the printing app and on printer.  Why doesn’t the smart app just set up printer data automatically.

Welcome to the HP Community --

I can't tell if you are actually asking or if you are commenting that you don't care for the limitation.

For the sake of an answer, going with the first --

Ignore if this is not the response you are seeking.

Start...

The printer is likely performing as designed.

HP Smart (Windows) and HP App (Mobile) are applications meant to serve / support a multitude of printer models and more than one time of connection between printer and network or printer and device.

Until and Unless something changes --

The application has not the means to understand the concept of "custom" settings nor can the application adjust the paper size / type on the printer for the current job.

In other words: The application reflects the information it finds but cannot correct that information if it is incorrect.

For example --

The application reads the "last available" information set at the printer control panel or using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Any new paper size / paper type information are set at the Printer Control Panel or using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

==================================

EWS – Tray and Paper Management / Paper > Trays

Alternate EWS format - Select newer InkJet printers and select LaserJet printers

Open your Browser

Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Paper > Trays > click on Tray to configure

Next (as available)

Section Print > Default Print Options > Select default options / tray

Tray and Paper – Paper Size / Paper Type / Paper Weight

Notes

Depending on the printer model, the Printer Control Panel touchscreen might provide access to Paper Size / Type settings immediately after the paper is (re)loaded into the appropriate printer intake tray or when the tray is opened and then closed.

-- Reminders --

EWS (Embedded Web Server) provides access and control for Settings, including Tray and Paper.

Paper Size, Type, and Weight loaded in the printer tray must be supported for use in that tray.

If asked enter the printer’s PIN number –

The default PIN might be located on the back or inside the printer (ink access area).

HP Smart / HP App Mobile might require that paper size / type is rechecked / adjusted before content is opened for print.
