Hi @curdley,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand how aggravating it is when your DeskJet 2855e shows up in the HP Smart app, acts connected to Wi‑Fi, but refuses to print, or it simply won't activate. Let's tackle this with clarity.

1. Reset the Printer’s Network Settings

This clears any corrupt connection data:

  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Press and hold the Wi‑Fi button.
  3. While holding it, turn the printer back on, and continue holding until the Wi‑Fi light blinks rapidly. This signals that the network settings have been reset.

2. Reconnect via Wi‑Fi / HP Smart

Once reset:

  • Press the Wi‑Fi button again, and ensure it blinks to enter setup mode.
  • Open HP Smart on your phone or PC, tap Add Printer (+), and follow prompts to select your 2.4 GHz home network and enter the password.

Make sure the printer and the device you're printing from are on the same network and close to the router (within ~10 ft).

3. Verify Wi‑Fi Band & Signal Strength

  • Dual-band routers require your printer on the 2.4 GHz network; 5 GHz isn't supported.
  • Keep the printer near the router temporarily to improve the signal during setup.

4. Update Firmware

An outdated firmware may block activation:

5. Restart & Power-Cycle Everything

  • Turn the printer off, unplug both the printer and the router, wait 30 seconds, then plug back in and restart both.
  • Reopen HP Smart and try activating the printer again.
