HP Smart Tank 5000/5100 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

No error message. It just stopped working. Then It said there was no printer attached to my system. It couldn't find the program to run. It's been working all this time without a problem. BUT today when I contacted HP I found out the warranty expired today. So they wiped the program off my computer so I couldn't use it??????

Hi @rob__JJJ

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand why the timing would be concerning, especially since the issue started on the same day your warranty expired. However, the expiration of an HP warranty does not disable your printer, remove its software, or prevent it from working. The warranty only affects the availability of repair and support services. In most cases, this issue is caused by a driver, connection, Windows update, or network communication problem, rather than the printer warranty expiring.

I would request you to please follow the steps:

Restart the printer and computer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Shut down the computer.
  • Unplug the printer's power cord for 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Restart the computer.

Check the connection

If using Wi-Fi

  • Verify that the Wireless light on the printer is solid blue.
  • If the light is blinking or off, reconnect the printer to your wireless network using the HP Smart app or the printer's wireless setup process.
  • Ensure the printer and computer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

If using USB

  • Disconnect the USB cable.
  • Reconnect it securely to both the printer and the computer.
  • Try a different USB port on the computer.
  • Avoid using a USB hub if possible.

Check if Windows detects the printer

  • Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Verify whether the HP Smart Tank 5100 series is listed.
  • If it appears as Offline, select it and set it as the default printer if needed.
  • If it is not listed, click Add device and allow Windows to search for the printer.

Verify Device Manager (USB connection)

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Look for the HP printer or any device with a yellow warning icon.
  • If a warning icon is present, uninstall the device and restart the computer.

Restart the Print Spooler service

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Locate Print Spooler.
  • Right-click it and select Restart.
  • Ensure the Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Reinstall the printer software

  • Remove the printer from Settings > Printers & scanners.
  • Uninstall the HP printer software or HP Smart app from Settings > Apps.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Download and install the latest HP App and the latest full-feature printer software for the HP Smart Tank 5100 series. Click Here
  • Add the printer again and complete the setup.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
