Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:
Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo
14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
15.) Restart the computer.
Once done, please download and install the software from here:

Hi Betty,
I have carried out all you suggested but the Printer Assistant still does not show either the maintenance icon or the scan icon.
I have managed to get around the scan problem but can't work out how to clean print heads without the maintenance icon.
The only icons showing are :- See whats printing, Set Preferences, Customise your printer and Print from mobile devices
Many thanks,

Let's run the HP Print and Scan Doctor:
Use this link for details on using the HP Print and Scan doctor: https://hp.care/2JyaC93
If the issue still persists, let's perform the scan: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/4026529/windows-10-using-system-file-checker
and update the Computer once again:
1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Hi Betty,
The print and scan doctor had no effect and I could not get the System File Checker to start. The only thin that did work was the Windows Update but that also failed to sort the problem. I feel resigned to the fact that the Printer Assistant will be incomplete and the only way around this is to get a new printer which I am loathe to do as this one prints superbly.
Many thanks again for your help

Try updating the Printer firmware: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168
If the issue still persists, we'll perform a system restore, which will take your Computer to a point before the update:
1) Save any open files and close all open programs.
2) In Windows, search for restore, and then open Create a restore point from the results list.
3) On the System Protection tab, click System Restore.
4) Click Next.
5) Click the Restore Point that you want to use, then click Next.
6) Click Finish to restore your computer to a previous point.
7) Do not interrupt System Restore when it starts. This can corrupt your hard drive and create more problems. 😎 Click Yes in the warning that appears.
9) System Restore returns the computer configuration to a previous point in time and restarts.
PS: Performing a system restore will not delete any files.
Let me know if this helps.

Hi Betty,
Printer firmware up to date and tried to use System Restore but that only showed one earlier restore point which I tried but without any success - still no icon in Printer Assistant to allow any maintenance including head cleaning which desperately needs doing

Hi Betty,
For some reason I cannot get a screenshot that I am able to send to you, each time I get one it is not recognised when I try to attach it.
Maybe my problem could be something to do with an operating system upgrade, as when I open up Printer Assistant I get the following PopUp :-
Operating System Issue
Your operating system has been upgraded to a newer version. This HP software application may not operate as intended due to this change. Some features could be disabled, while others may work as intended.
For more information click here (When I do this it takes me to the HP website and says 'Oops, we can't find that page)
Software Version : 32.0.1180.44630
Even though I have clicked on 'Don't show this again' it continues to show each time I open Printer Assistant however I still have no Scan or Maintenace icon in the Print and Scan area of the Assistant, just 'See what's Printing', 'Set Preferences','Customize your printer' and 'Print from your mobile devices'.
