HP Photosmart Premium All-In-One Printer C410a
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

After HP Solution Center quit, I am resigned to use HP's two other printer apps, HP Smart and HP Scan & Capture.

For some reason, the printer -- set up for wireless -- continually recycles off and on.  Unplugging it and plugging it back in seems to make no difference.  And this seems to occur only when the computer is in use.  In the morning, when I wake the computer from standby, the printer recycling begins.

Unless I actively point HP Smart at the wireless printer, it continues to recycle.  But once I run HP Smart and click on my printer icon, the recycling stops.

I'm not sure if I can reproduce this by pointing HP Scan & Capture at it.  Right now, the printer has entered standby mode and is not recycling.  I've closed HP Smart and it's still in standby mode and not continually recycling.

I made no changes to the system after the Adobe Flash incident, other than uninstalling and reinstalling HP Solution Center.  I also set the system date back and tried Solution Center -- which worked.  But I reset the system date and have resolved to not use Solution Center unless absolutely necessary (by resetting system date).

I would appear to me that something on the computer is sending Recycle commands to the printer, and once I point HP Smart at it, the commands stop.

Also, can someone confirm to me whether recycling the printer uses ink?  It sounds like it's recharging and cleaning the print heads -- but I'm just guessing.  Certainly, if it is using ink, I can't have the printer constantly recycling.  (Yes, I've had to resort to turning the printer off.)  But for now, after pointing HP Smart at it -- and even closing HP Smart after -- the recycling has stopped.

So, what exactly is going on here?  Might it have something to do with the latest Window 10 patch?

I should mention that I also have a newer HP Envy Photo 7155 All-In-One printer attached wirelessly, and it is not exhibiting this "recycling" behavior.  I also can control it using HP Smart.

HP Smart cannot likely control that old printer.  Even having the computer running Windows 10 is not enough to make the printer and its software compatible to the point where HP Smart will work with the old (printer) hardware.

Having changed the system date is not a recommended solution - the printer aside, changing the date on your computer can cause other kinds of unexpected changes to the File System.  Observation only, of course, you should do what you want.

The constant recycling of the printer hardware is a problem, of course.

If you cannot regain control over the hardware, nothing else is going to make much difference.

Were it me,

I'd remove the (old) printer from HP Smart.

I'd not fuss with the system date - again, personal opinion.

Practical measures to regain physical control over the (old) printer

Try here:

Printer Turns Off Unexpectedly or Repeatedly

Ignore the last step - there is no updated firmware for the printer...

What else?

If you expect to keep using the printer, best read the User Guide to find alternatives to Tools no longer available in the Full Solution wrapper.

What else?

An abbreviated list of alternatives

1.  Start Scan using HP Scan executable

2.  Windows Scan Microsoft Store - Requires Windows 8 or higher

3.  Paint - the Original - Paint (mspaint) can be used to scan.

4.  NAPS2 – “Not Another PDF Scanner”

5.  HP Scan and Capture - Microsoft Store - Requires Windows 8 or higher

6.  HP Scan Extended

7.  Irfanview > Brilliant Free Photo Viewing and Print Software

Thanks for your feedback.  HP Smart does indeed work with my old printer, which gives me a good fallback position to the now-useless HP Solution Center.

I viewed all of your suggestions.  The one that struck me was unplugging the device from the power strip and replugging it back in.  I just tried that, and the printer is on and no longer recycling.  Maybe that will solve it.  We get quite a few lightning storms here as well as power surges.  I'm often rushing to pull the plug on my power strips and also the data line.

I just tested printing capabilities, going from Windows File Explorer to print a .pdf file wirelessly to the HP Photosmart Premium C410a.  So far, so good.  That action did not send the printer into a recycle loop.

Next, I used HP Smart to find a .pdf on my computer and send it to the 410.  Worked flawlessly.  Printer does not recycle after the print.

So, maybe pulling the power cord helped.  It seems I may have used that solution some time ago.  But it was so long ago that I can't remember what the problem was.  I do know that I changed the location of where the printer power cord is plugged into the power strip, ostensibly so that I can get to it more easily in order to pull the plug.

On further inspection, I think I determined that accessing the printer using HP Scan & Capture is what set the printer into the recycle loop.

The printer had been on and had not been recycling.  It had settled down since I unplugged power and plugged back in.  I scanned a document using HP Scan & Capture and the printer immediately after started recycling every couple of minutes.

I eventually shut down the computer and removed power from the printer.  Upon startup (comp. & print), the printer behaved once again -- sitting comfortably in idle state.

After using HP Smart to scan a document, the printer still acted normally.

I'm beginning to think that HP Scan & Capture is causing problems.

Could be true - some suggestions might work better for some people (and printers) than others.

There might be differences elsewhere in the OS that influence what the printer can do / is doing.

if that is the case, you'll want to remove HP Scan and Capture from your list.

Stay Safe.
