A teacher has a MBA running 15.7.1 and a LJ 1606 printer.  Using this printer, she is unable to print on both sides.  Printer is connected using IP address.

Using the HP Compatibility Printer Software package, I installed it and the computer is applying the correct driver "LJ 1606, 6.9" and Duplex mode is enabled.  I tried AirPrint and HP socket and same result.

When printing a PDF document, after choosing "print on both sides" the printer is printing the 1st page then blank then 2nd page and so on.

How do I fix it?

@pfisher, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Check Printer Settings

Open the Control Panel or Settings on the computer.

Go to Devices and Printers or Printers and Scanners.

Right-click on the HP LaserJet 1606 printer and select Printer Properties or Printing Preferences.

Ensure that duplex printing is selected within the settings.

Look for a Duplex or Two-Sided option in the print settings tab.

Select Long-Edge Binding or Short-Edge Binding depending on your preference.

Update the Printer Driver

Go to the HP support page.

Enter the LJ 1606 model number to find the latest drivers for your operating system.

Download and install the latest drivers (if there’s an update available).

Restart the computer and printer to apply the updates.

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

Printing from PDF

If you're printing a PDF, try the following:

Open the PDF document.

When selecting the print options, ensure you select Print on both sides and check the layout options (long-edge or short-edge).

In Adobe Acrobat, ensure that the Choose Paper Source by PDF Page Size option is not selected, as this can sometimes cause printing issues.

Try printing the PDF again after verifying the print settings.

Printer Queue and Spooler Settings

Ensure that there are no pending or stuck print jobs in the printer queue.

Go to Devices and Printers, right-click the printer, and select See what's printing.

Cancel any pending jobs, then try printing again.

Check the Print Spooler service:

Open Run (Windows + R), type services.msc, and press Enter.

Locate the Print Spooler service, right-click it, and select Restart.

Test with Another Application

If the problem persists, try printing from a different application (e.g., Word or Chrome) to rule out issues with the specific software (like Adobe Reader).

Reinstall Printer

If the above steps do not work, it might help to completely remove and reinstall the printer:

Remove the printer from Devices and Printers.

Uninstall any existing drivers from Control Panel > Programs and Features.

Reboot the system and reinstall the printer driver using the latest version from HP's websit

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
